An area forecast notes cloudiness, wind and mild mood with rain and possible snow. A rapidly developing winter storm brings heavy snow to southwest and west central Kansas with potential for a white Christmas. Temperatures dip Friday near seasonal normals as fronts move east.
Four defendants entered pleas to felonies yesterday. Allen N Willis pleaded guilty to two forgery counts and one uttering a forged instrument with an indeterminate sentence pending. Marvin Glass Gary Brooks and Don Everly admitted guilt to arson related to a barn fire near Chanute with varied prison terms. Brooks and Everly also faced burglary and larceny charges with concurrent reformatories. A 14 year old Chanute boy involved in the arson case was sent to Boys Industrial School. Don Chittenden faces later appearance on break in charges.
Copper wire cut from two farm properties worked by Glen Strack northeast of Chanute. Neosho County Sheriff George Neely said the theft occurred in the past few days. A separate county theft Sunday night totaled about 3,000 feet from the Katy railroad right of way north of the US 59 overpass near Parsons.
Police questioned a 13 year old Chanute boy about a hunting knife and toy guns in his possession. He admitted taking the knife from a home and said he found the guns in a vacant lot. He was released with disposition pending.
Santa shared letters from Cha nute area children listing gifts like a GI Joe a record player a tricycle and a Johnny Seven. He noted some requests stretch from electric stoves and refrigerators to dolls boots and typewriters as he prepares his delivery list for Christmas Eve.
Comedian Bob Hope continued a royal Bangkok appearance with his left ankle ligaments torn after being shoved offstage. Doctors taped the ankle, and Hope planned another show in Bangkok before heading to Saigon with the troupe.
An intercepted letter claims Bob Hope will collect a sizable sum for an ankle injury not via insurance or legal channels but by detailing the incident.
President Johnson refrained from comment on the Saigon announced 30 hour Christmas truce in Viet Nam as Vice President Humphrey and congressional leaders praised the order. Senate Leader Mansfield urged extending the cease fire to Tet while Pope Paul VI was credited with aiding peace efforts.
U S troops and South Vietnamese forces prepared for a 30 hour Christmas truce as a 50 aircraft raid hit Uong Bi power plant near Haiphong and ground fighting left 90 Viet Cong dead. One surface to air missile downed three U S planes while the cease fire began at 6 pm Friday and soldiers were told to fire only in self defense.
Vernon Larkin aged 34 of 621 East 17th suffered a fracture of the left hip in a motorcycle accident at 14th and Malcolm around 6 15 last night. Police said he was west bound when the motorcycle ran off the street into the yard of the John Quinn residence and was thrown from the machine. He was taken by ambulance to Neosho Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Police conducted radar speed checks between Lincoln and Grant on Main Street from 1 15 to 2 50 pm. No violations were found. Sgt Tom Ogden noted 75 percent of drivers rode about 15 mph, 15 percent about 10 mph, and 10 percent about 20 mph. Chief Lige Matlock said complaints about speeds on the new four lane between Central and Steuben prompted ongoing checks with a 20 mph limit.
A 19 year old East German youth climbed barbed wire barriers and crawled through the death strip then swam a narrow stream to reach West Berlin Wednesday night according to West Berlin police.
The city council met with William Corey operator of the Parsons Ambulance Service to hear a proposal to supply ambulance service here. Attending were local morticians Police Chief Lige Matlock firm representatives and Glen Dormois Neosho Memorial Hospital administrator. A prior Wichita proposal by Bob Dietz was withdrawn due to his wife’s illness. Ambulance service had been provided by Chanute funeral homes but they are discontinuing.
Police were called at 2 20 a m to Charles Skilling 11 W 3rd where four tires on his work pickup were slashed with an ice pick. A neighboring Ern est Christiansen 303 S Santa Fe also had two tires flat. Skilling had offered a 25 reward previously and raised it to 50 today for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Kansas traffic death log shows 0 fatalities in the Topeka area during the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. Thursday. The figure compares with 35 deaths in December 1965 and 33 in the same period in 1964.
