Some members of a Kansas special legislative committee plan to present evidence to the grand jury called by Attorney General Vern Miller. Senator Ross Doyen hopes to appear in January. The inquiry centers on state architectural contracts and the University of Kansas Medical Center deal.
The legislature and Miller clash over authorizing legal help for a committee. The Legislative Coordinating Council approves up to 10000 for an attorney. Bennett says witnesses want orderly testimony through their own lawyer and may appeal to supervising judges if hiring is blocked. Doyen plans to testify before the grand jury.
Earl Cravens 21 of Altoona was arrested in Independence on two counts of forgery related to payroll checks stolen from the Archer Daniels-Midland Co. plant in Fredonia. Cravens admitted taking the checks and forging payee names after a description and handwriting samples linked him to the crime.
Donations to a Labette County drug fund exceed 1000 dollars as Sheriff Carl D Cloke appeals to civic groups for contributions to equip special agents for undercover drug purchases. County Attorney Daniel Brewster acts as fund custodian, with one or two committee members potentially testifying before a grand jury.
