A cold Arctic blast hits Kansas with temperatures plunging to 23 in the area today and up to 10 below tonight in parts. Snow totals reach two to five inches across eastern and central Kansas with drivers warned to expect icy spots on bridges and highways. Weather officials forecast a cold day tomorrow with a high near 25 to 30 and generally clear skies.
The 1967 Legislature enacted a county office compensation law affecting Neosho and all Kansas counties. Salaries rise for county attorney, clerk, treasurer, district court clerk, register of deeds, probate judge, sheriff and county commissioners with scale by population and multiple district court locations.
Stores will stay open tonight and tomorrow night for shopping. Saturday is Christmas Eve with most retailers closing at normal times. Monday is Christmas Day with general closing. Post offices operate holiday service only and no city or rural mail delivery. The Tribune will not be published.
Beverly Hills actor Stuart Erwin died of a heart attack at his home aged 64. Police were called by his wife actress June Collyer who reported finding him unconscious on the bathroom floor after a thump early this morning.
Three 18 year old Chanute youths were fined $25 each and placed on probation for six months by the Neosho county probate court yesterday. They were charged with contributing to delinquency of minors for buying beer for younger boys on October 31 and November 1. Names were withheld by the court and county attorney.
In Topeka, Republicans fault Governor Docking’s proposal to build 612 miles of roads funded by a large bond issue. Rep Arden Dierdorff calls it fiscally irresponsible while Rex Duwe notes financing details are hazy. Plan includes 206 miles of toll roads costing 123.20 million and 406 miles of expressways at 210.70 million.
A dawn tornado struck Potosi Missouri killing three and injuring 39 while heavily damaging 10 businesses and 20 homes. North of town two trailers were destroyed and multiple buildings in a shopping center were ruined. In Fort Smith Arkansas a tornado caused property damage but no serious injuries.
Communist missiles fired three surface to air rockets at a flight of B52 bombers over the DMZ but all missed. U S command denied any B52 losses while Hanoi claimed two bombers were shot down. US fighters struck the launch site, leaving it in flames.
Snow postponed by winter weather delayed the New Mexico JC snow dance until Tuesday night. Officials said heavy snowfall forced the postponement from last week, with students and staff attending the rescheduled event at Hobbs.
In Canberra President Thieu and President Johnson publicly backed Johnsons peace proposals as consistent with Saigons policy. Thieu reaffirmed willingness to discuss with NLF members though not treating the Front as independent. Johnson said a halt to the war could come quickly if informal talks proceed and past accords are honored.
Prof Christian Barnard announced the death of Louis Washkansky, the world first heart transplant patient, amid reports the postmortem showed respiratory failure from pneumonia and no clear evidence that organ rejection caused the death. Washkansky died eight hours after the operation at Groote Schuur Hospital with infection and diabetes noted as risk factors.
Helicopters reach the distant western edge of the Navajo Reservation to deliver medical help and food drops amid heavy snow. Lt. Herman P. Tsosie says 17 000 to 20 000 people may be in that area as fuel shortages and rapid burns threaten the desert margins.

Mayor Charles Wright of Topeka and five friends hunted in a cornfield when a cock pheasant jumped up. They fired six shots and all missed. the bird flew into a power line and died. In Salina, William Swisher Sr. hunted coveys but was blinded by sun and only bagged one quail, which wriggled under his foot.
