The Supreme Court affirmed a ruling banning federal tax exempt status for all white private schools born to avoid desegregation. A three judge panel also upheld tightening IRS standards for determining discrimination, continuing enforcement against segregationist institutions.
Four people faced petty theft charges after shoplifting at Farmers Discount Center 615 W Cherry. Kristy Burke 18 and Janet Courter 18 Fort Scott pled guilty and fined 25 each for stealing stereo tapes. Eva Wrestler 59 Walnut pled guilty and paid 25 for stockings. President Nguyen Van Thieu announced 24 hour ceasefires for allied forces in South Vietnam over Christmas New Year and Tet. He urged the Communists to end fighting immediately to allow talks on peace in Indochina. Viet Cong had said it would observe three day Christmas and New Year and four days for Tet.
Robert G. Baker former Senate secretary turned millionaire seeks parole from a three year federal sentence. He joins antiwar priest Daniel Berrigan and three other inmates in presenting pleas for early release to the U S Board of Parole.
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy says he will renew in the next Congress the probe of government wiretaps. He claims correspondence with the Department of Justice contradicts statements by President Nixon and officials before the Supreme Court about eavesdropping levels.
Washington AP Civil Aeronautics Board examiner William J. Madden recommended disapproval of the proposed merger between American Airlines and Western Airlines. He argued the merger would disrupt the balance between the Big Four trunk airlines and the other major carriers that form the core U.S. air transport system.
