Flat Rats on North Island Endure Isolated Life
Bop and Bernetha Basney, the last of the flat rats, have lived 50 years on a tiny island off Lake St. Clair near Detroit. They trap about 1,000 muskrats yearly for meat and pelts, fish minnows for bait, and guide fishermen, all with a limited waterway, no phone, and occasional storms threatening their home.
