Nursing Home Fire Kills 18 in Indiana

A severe blaze at McGraw Nursing Home in Fountaintown Indiana killed 18 people and left 2 missing as 16 bodies were recovered from the two story facility in bitter cold. Three attendants saved 15 patients while two rescued inmates died. Fire officials attributed the cause to an overheated furnace with a hot air duct possibly igniting a wall.

Stolen Car Recovered Near Thayer

A Topeka youth, Eddie Greene, 18, was arrested in Thayer after a stolen car taken last night was recovered two miles south and a mile east of Thayer. He was held at Erie for Topeka authorities as sheriff George Neely and others assisted. The owner and Topeka officers were due to arrive to return Greene and the car.

New Plant For Sewage At Humboldt

Humboldt city council authorizes a 100000 dollar bond for a new sewage disposal plant and approves applying for a U S Public Health Service grant under the water pollution control act. The current plant fails to meet future extension needs. Ediger Engineering Co. of Wichita handles planning.

He posted $210 bond after restitution totaling $299.93 and was released overnight. Damages involved a 1953 Chevrolet pickup and a 1956 Ford, plus a 199 DeSoto.

Elmer Wehlage won the grand prize in Chanute JayCees third annual Christmas home lighting contest for a Santa Claus display at 18 East 9th. Judges selected his Southeast Ward display as best citywide, with out-of-town judges naming Evangelical United Brethren as church display champion. Ward winners include Mike Bauer and Dale Schiesser in the Southwest, Rex Babcock in the Northwest, and Ivan Snyder in the Northeast.

Post Office at Earlton Replaced by Mail Station

A rural mail station will be established at Earlton at month’s end replacing the Earlton post office. The Earlton rural route will be renamed Chanute R 4 and serves 114 rural boxes. Operations end Dec 30 and begin Dec 31 with savings cited. Leslie Crow won the bid to provide the rural station services.
