School crimes rise in first national survey
The Office of Education reports that half of surveyed elementary and high schools reported at least one crime to police in a five month period. Burglary, personal theft and drug abuse topped the list of 11 crimes. Congress ordered the study to gauge frequency and seriousness of school violence. The National Center for Education Statistics surveyed 8,000 schools in 4,000 systems, including non public schools.
