A bottle gas truck and a Boston & Maine Diesel passenger car collided at a private Nashua crossing near a wood preserving plant. Six died including Robert Wrenn his wife Patricia and their two babies. Thirty hospitalized. Vaughan Talbot died later. Fire and explosions spread through the train as passengers fled.

48 Crewm en Rescued After Tanker Explodes
New York AP reported the merchant steamer Mary Ellen Conway headed for a South American port after rescuing 41 of the 50 crew of the Liberian tanker Sinclair Petrolore. The ship sank after an explosion and fire in the Atlantic about 360 miles east of Brazil. Two crewmen are listed as lost and one rescued crewman was injured.

Warren L. Hartley 39, postmaster of Belle Plaine, was found dead in his car nine miles northwest of Wellington. A 16 gauge shotgun was found between his knees. coroner Dr B J Myers said self-inflicted gunshot caused death. Hartley disappeared after attending an American Legion meeting Monday night. He had been active in school church and civic affairs and previously worked in Wichita. He left a wife and two children.

Six rural Chase County high schools Cedar Point Matfield Green Saffordville Strong City Elmdale and Clements vote December 16 on forming a countywide high school.
