U S officials recount a Viet Cong assault on Dak Song about 130 miles northeast of Saigon with flamethrowers and grenades. Reports vary on casualties from 20 dead 30 wounded to 6 dead 15 wounded 29 missing. About 400 guerrillas burned 30 or 40 homes. Mon tagnard villagers believed.
Lt Gen Leonard F Chapman Jr emerges as Johnson’s preferred choice for commandant, seen as a middle ground between rival backers of Lt Gen Victor Krulak and Lt Gen Lewis Walt. Chapman, 54, has served as assistant commandant since July and was chief of staff under Gen Greene, the current commandant.
Louis Washkansky, 55, continues to recover after receiving Denise Darvall’s heart in a landmark operation at Groote Schuur Hospital. He eats light foods, speaks briefly, and doctors report the respirator has been removed as they monitor the body’s acceptance of the foreign heart and suppress rejection risk with drugs.
Hutchinson Lt. Gov. John Crutcher, 51, declares his Republican candidacy for Kansas governor at a news conference criticizing Gov. Robert Docking. Crutcher, a real estate lender and former state senator, is the second GOP entrant following Raymond J. Van Skiver, a Wichita teacher.
The area forecast calls for partly cloudy conditions tonight and Wednesday with a low near 40 and a high around 60. Precipitation probability is 10 percent on Wednesday. Topeka reports warm, sunny weather today ahead of a Pacific cold front and an eastward-moving storm center that bring cooler temperatures and scattered showers.
The Topeka AP report shows Kansas traffic deaths for 24 hours to 9 am Tuesday and December totals. For 1967 the year-end deaths reached 608, compared with 688 in the 1966 period.

Senate fights over a Dirksen amendment to bar federal funds for busing to desegregate schools stall the $14.2 billion three year extension of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Two of three Monday votes ended in ties as Griffin and Dirksen seek a path forward with HEW desegregation limits under Southern amendments. Morse denounces the move as federal control.
Gov. Docking appointed Marle M. Hayden as Kansas superintendent of public instruction to fill the vacancy from W. C. Kampschroeder's death. Hayden, a Republican, has served since 1960 in the State Department of Public Instruction and previously led Talmage High School and Lincoln schools. The choice follows advice from eight statewide education organizations.
Mary Switzer, head of the federal welfare program, urges job placement and training to reduce welfare rolls. She anticipates new Congress legislation funding large job training and child care for welfare families, while stressing urgency and taxpayer frustration with rising welfare costs. Switzer, 67, leads the Social and Rehabilitation Service and seeks to apply successful handicapped training methods to employable welfare recipients.
Forty one people attended the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce breakfast in Fredonia at the Mainliner motel. Fredonia city attorney Steve Rogers praised the arts council library and swimming pool and noted wholesale water sales to rural districts. Fred Harris of Chanute spoke on the meeting’s purpose and presented a gift to Mayor Wayne Adams as Bob Wilson served as toastmaster.
A Paducah resident begins a state driving test with a trooper present and ends it early after hitting a parked car. The incident occurred as the vehicle rolled from the parking lot during Monday’s session.
