Carl Wortman, superintendent of the city pumping station, reported Neosho River high water records over 30 years. Since 1926 there have been 64 high water periods with only two Decembers, June leading at 11, May with nine, and other months ranging from one to eight events.

About 300000 women under 65 will start receiving federal old age and survivors insurance checks this week. Commissioner Schottland said more than a third of eligible women will receive November benefits under recent amendments. A head on collision between an automobile and a semi trailer truck near Plymouth on U S 50 killed 18 year old Albert Lonsinger of Augusta Kansas. Wilbur Slattery of Wichita, the truck driver, was injured and taken to Newman Hospital in Emporia. Lonsinger was alone in the car, son of Mr and Mrs Albert Lonsinger of Augusta.
A bridge over the Kaw River at Linwood DeSoto road collapsed late yesterday when a dump truck carrying two tons of sand sank part of the 700 foot span. The driver George Parks, 29, of Kansas City escaped with facial bruises as about 100 feet of the bridge gave way onto a dry sand bed. Power and gas service were disrupted for an hour.
In Baxter Springs Kansas two people died and a third was critically injured when two cars collided on Highway 166 near the city. Victims were Virginia Grafmiller 35 of Baxter Springs and J O Hennings of Kansas City. Husband Guy B Grafmiller suffered critical injuries and was hospitalized.
Thousands of Hungarian women gathered for a second day of mourning over anti-Communist insurgents as Russian tanks blocked access to Petofi Square. Police dispersed about 400 protesters with rifle butts, carting away several adults and possibly children.

Independence Kansas pilot James Coleman 43 made a forced landing in a field near Coal Missouri after running low on fuel amid bad weather. He landed safely in a farm field owned by Ervin Fowler about a half mile from Coal and spent the night in Coal. The Cessna 172 was leased from Executive Aircraft of Kansas City.
A 66 year old Kansas City woman, Mrs. Mary Frances Cantrell, was struck by a car on a rain slicked street and died about an hour later in a hospital. The driver, Thomas Edward Peretto, 33, of Overland Park, said he did not see her.
Russian army guards in Berlin halted Allied road traffic out of West Berlin forcing a U S Army truck convoy to retreat. The move comes after recent harassment of Allied trains and stirs fears of renewed attempts to curb access to West Berlin surrounded by Communist East Germany.
Iraqi Turkish Iranian and Pakistani ambassadors met with State Department officials led by Secretary Dulles for about 90 minutes. They conveyed fresh assurances that the United States will vigorously support the independence and security of Baghdad Pact nations amid Soviet pressure.

Dr A M Garton and Dr R Herbert Rollow found about 500 dollars missing from their billfolds after leaving lockers in Neosho Memorial Hospital. Garton said 50 to 100 dollars were gone while Rollow believed he had 400 dollars in small bills. Police investigation ongoing.
Leavenworth Kansas retired construction worker John J. Shaughnessy, 63, died in an early morning fire that heavily damaged his living quarters above a brother’s garage. Fire officials have not determined the cause. Survived by three brothers and seven sisters.

MINEOLA New York Angelo LaMarca on trial for his life collapsed in court causing a recess. The 31 year old kidnapper of baby Peter Weinberger slumped forward at the defense table after his forehead struck the table in a jolt. A psychiatrist testified he was sane at the time of the kidnapping and death.
