Mrs. Petterson faces jokes after a fall on ice on her front steps leaving her with a black eye. She quips the head is tougher than concrete as she plays piano. City trees for 1958 memorial display have offers from Alfred Savidge and Carter Brookhart with help from Russell Fletcher. Fire chief Bill Brennan notes November fires cause about 1000 dollars in damage and bring year total to 39000 with 127 alarms so far.
About $50 damage reported to both trucks after brakes failed on a bridge 12 miles south of Erie. Jack Levi Thomas of Parsons drove south while Ben Alex Bralley of Joplin headed north. No injuries or charges cited by the highway patrol.
Sunny skies blanket Kansas as the weather bureau forecast daytime highs of 55 to 65. A cold front may raise cloudiness tomorrow while low temperatures tonight dip into the upper 20s to low 30s. Yesterday’s highs ranged from 38 at Olathe to 54 at Garden City with most lows in the 20s.
Powell B. McHaney 52 of St. Louis, insurance executive and Missouri State Mental Health Commission chairman, died in a traffic accident in Washington today.
CAPE CANAVERAL Florida AP The countdown for the nations first test launching of a satellite passed its halfway point with no major delays as weather remained overcast and winds reached about 15 mph. Defense official Schooley said the countdown began after technical preparations and preflight cleanup. Vanguard deputy director Paul Walsh described a 23 page checklist and hourly time signals as crews checked every component. Wind above 10 mph could affect the rocket and rain would not prevent firing.
State Highway Commission argues a one cent gas tax increase is needed to secure about seven million dollars for highway work and to match federal funds in 1959. Walter Johnson cites rising costs and county maintenance needs, while the Petroleum Industries Committee disputes the revenue outlook and questions the increase.
At St Louis the National Council of Churches debates its authority over member denominations. Dr Truman B Douglas argues councils are real dimensions of Christian unity, not subservient masters. He notes councils mediate judgment and embody the true church across divided congregations.
An oil heater toppled by an employee sparked a blaze at Porter Glass Co in Martins Ferry Ohio killing six workers five of them women. Firemen found the sixth victim early today and five bodies had been recovered earlier including several Martins Ferry and Bellaire residents. Six others were injured including owner A H Porter and three other workers. The missing listed five women and one man believed dead were from Martins Ferry and nearby Bellaire with the fire starting on the first floor and trapping occupants on the second floor of the two story frame building.
Fire caused by an overheated wood stove tore through a farmhouse near Marianna Arkansas killing a pregnant mother Mrs J L Bowers 37 and seven of her children aged 9 to 1 The sheriff identified the dead woman as the wife of a Negro tenant on a nearby Westor farm The husband left to hunt a few hours before the blaze broke out.

The Coffeyville firm Stitzel & Stitzel were named by the chamber of commerce museum committee mayor and city manager to draft plans for the Osa and Martin Johnson museum. The selection was unanimous with plans to meet city officials December 10. Estimated cost and site assessment steps were outlined with no charges if bond issues fail.
Forty representatives of electric cooperatives from Southeast Kansas attend the annual district meeting of the Kansas Electric Cooperative Association in this city. Howard Sell of Fredonia presided as district executive committeeman. Attending cooperatives included Altamont Girard Iola Fredonia Mound City and Cedar Vale with Perry Miller of Topeka the state association executive secretary also present.
Kansas traffic fatalities listed by the State Accident Records Section show 1 in the past 24 hours and 517 to date in 1957, compared with 615 in the same period of 1956.
Community leaders from Lions Club Kiwanis Junior Chamber of Commerce report $1127.02 collected for Pittsburg State College drum corps trip to the Holiday Bowl in St Petersburg Florida. Additional pledges and a $100 VFW gift push total past $2000 with more expected before December 21.
Twenty six extension agents from a 10 county area attend a four day communication school at the Memorial Building. Sessions scheduled tonight and tomorrow night will conclude Friday. Instructor team from Kansas State College includes Gene Warner and assistants Mildred Walker Norman Whitehair and Leo Wendling. Topics cover understanding people and means of communication. This is the third of 13 such schools in the state. Areas represented include Allen Bourbon Crawford Cherokee Labette Montgomery Wilson Woodson and Neosho counties.
Zoning administrator Tom Morehead warns 25 to 50 property owners not yet filed must certify they operate a business in zones where allowed. After December 17 illegal operation may occur. home occupations exempt if no on site sale beyond immediate family and horsepower limits. 97 certificates issued. affidavit must show prior use and compliance with ordinance. Penalty ranges from 10 to 500 dollars per day post deadline.
Cecil J. Meeker Post 1654 VFW honored seven members for 25 years of continuous service at a hall ceremony. Recipients were T. H. Lovett Kenneth Gingrich Joe Rensing and Cash Wagner with Braden Welch Han sen unable to attend. The post dates to 1932 and awarded a $100 contribution to the Senior High School drum corps trip to Florida. Rex Kiser and Fred Twyman presented pins with other officials in attendance.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigated the death of 68 year old John Foos of Medford Oklahoma. His body was found beside State Highway 11 about nine miles from Medford at 3 am. Police believe he was struck by a moving vehicle, likely a truck. A truck signal arm was found near the body and Kansas Highway Patrol was asked to assist. Medford lies about 20 miles south of the Kansas Oklahoma line.
Santa will visit Main Street from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday and again on December 14, with additional sessions on December 16, 19, and December 2. Les Matthews of the Chamber of Commerce said a red suit will be ready and a second donated by Mrs. Betty Lou Bower. Guy Smith will select the style. Santa plans to chat with children and hand out candy, 30 pounds already sent ahead.
In Sycamore Illinois a multi agency search for Maria Ridolph a 7 year old girl reported abducted last night by a man offering a ride failed to locate the child. Hundreds joined city county and state police scouring vacant lots corn fields freight cars and buildings along the Kishwaukee River for clues. Maria last seen about 7 p m playing with Cathie Sigman 8 near the Sigman home the Sigman girl reported the man named Johnny paused to talk to the girls and offered them a ride before Maria vanished.
President Eisenhower named US District Judge Lawrence E. Walsh of New York as deputy attorney general with a recess appointment. The 45 year old judge will have a formal nomination sent to Congress when it reconvenes, succeeding William P. Rogers who moved up to attorney general after Brownell’s resignation.
Fort Scott resident Edna Booker, who escaped Missouri Women's Prison in 1936, is granted a full pardon by Governor James T. Blair after 21 years with an unblemished outside record. Booker, then 73 and serving a life term for murder, was aided by prison officials’ recommendation and later built a life in Kansas. She was captured in Ottawa, Kansas, and returned to prison.
A 12 inch water main ruptured and spouted 15 feet high flooding basements of six business houses in the 600 block of Minnesota Ave Kansas City Kas. Officials began pumping water from the basements as unofficial damage estimates ranged from 250000 to 500000 dollars. The cause was not immediately determined.
A new charter issued by the State Corporation Commission formalizes the incorporation of M and B Drilling Co with capital of 10000. Frank Keith 316 W Pine is named resident agent. Incorporators include Keith Robert D Yandle 509 E 14th and Gerald Dix Karlton.
President Eisenhower told congressional leaders he plans about a two billion dollar rise in defense but seeks to keep total budget from rising above this year’s 72 billion dollars. Senators Dirksen Bridges and Saltonstall indicated confidence in avoiding a deficit, with cuts possible in other areas.
James A. McCain president of Kansas State College proposed a central professional manpower pool for Western democracies. He addressed an all college assembly in Manhattan Kansas arguing such a pool could raise military and economic strength and might be run by OECD UNESCO or NATO. He noted impressive gains in scientist and engineer output but called for greater Western European cooperation to solve manpower problems.
Richard Rees, 18, a Kansas State College student, was awarded a $400 Sears-Roebuck Foundation 4-H Scholarship at the national 4-H Club Congress. Rees, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Nord of Coffeyville, was one of six recipients honored yesterday.
