Accused Kansas killer deemed competent to stand trial

Francis Donald Nemechek 26 was ruled mentally competent and ordered to stand trial Jan 31 for five murders in western Kansas. District Judge Flood granted a change of venue to a site outside the 23rd Judicial District. Nemechek faces charges in Ellis, Trego and Graham counties with killings from 1974 to 1975.

Carter convenes 16 economic advisers over steel prices

Party-goers convicted of marijuana possession

Four of ten people arrested in a Nov 13 raid at 911 S Santa Fe were convicted of misdemeanor possession of marijuana in Chanute City Court. Richard Beaver and Howard Duncan pleaded guilty and were fined 150 dollars. Gary Beaver also pled guilty and received 30 days in county jail with parole revoked on a prior weapon conviction. Scot Redburn was found guilty and fined 150. John Schmeltz was found not guilty after pleading not guilty. Debbie Harmon had case continued to Dec 13. others charged with felony possession, Jacklyn Dillion, Douglas White, and Mike Kelso, were continued.
