South Africa refused to back an Anglo American proposal for a peaceful shift to black rule in Rhodesia. Prime Minister Vorster balked at including black guerrillas in the armed forces or placing the military under a UN peacekeeping body. Ex-con Kills Wife Son Then Takes Own Life in Hartford Siege

Neosho County tests dust abatement along 21st Street

Son of Sam found incompetent to stand trial in NYC killings

David Berkowitz 24, known as the Son of Sam, was ruled incompetent to stand trial for the ambush murders of six. Psychiatrists described him as paranoid with a guarded prognosis and said he cannot participate in his defense. Judge Gerald Held ordered hospital remand pending further orders. In a separate incident, Berkowitz was punched by a fellow inmate at Kings County Jail during a shower confrontation.
