Aviation Day draws 250 plus to Chanute airport

A fine day for flying attracted over 250 participants including children to Chanute Municipal Airport for Aviation Day. Dickerhoof Flying Service sponsored rides, covering gas costs with a small shortfall. Dozens of pilots volunteered, offering continuous flights and several awards honored unusual planes and models across divisions.

Ford Carter clash over flipflops and debates heats up

The race started early with Ford criticizing Carter as a flipflopper after Ford unveiled a 1.5 billion 10 year parks plan at Yellowstone. Carter accused Ford of reversing on park improvements while Ford urged the first debate, saying he cannot wait to pin Carter down. White House aides said talks on debate timing and format are close with a plan to hold a session before September 28.

Five students die in fraternity house fire at Baker University

A Sunday fire gutted the Kappa Sigma house near Baker University in Baldwin Kansas claiming five young men. Survivors described the horror while campus officials prepared a memorial service and flags went to half staff. Radioactive Contamination at Hanford Plant After Explosion

Eight to ten workers at the Hanford Atomic Reservation were contaminated by americium from a chemical blast at an Atlantic Richfield Hanford plant. One worker suffered minor cuts and was decontaminated at the Hanford Environmental Health Foundation, others at the plant. Cause under investigation. spokesman Hal Lindberg said the explosion occurred during americium recovery from spent fuel and blew out a hood panel.

North Korean gunboats seize strayed South Korean boat

In dense fog, North Korean gunboats fired on and captured a South Korean fishing boat that entered North Korean waters in the Japan Sea. The Fisheries Office reported 23 crewmen but gave no casualty details. KCNA said an unidentified ship refused to identify itself before detention about 10 miles north of the border near Kosong.

Weather outlook calls for mostly cloudy skies through Tuesday with thunderstorms tonight and Tuesday. Highs reach the upper 80s today and mid to upper 80s Tuesday, with lows in the 60s. Southerly winds 5 to 15 mph. Rain chances 20 percent tonight and 30 percent Tuesday.
