Five Die in Head On Crash Near Earlton on K47

Five persons died and five injured in a head on collision between a car and a pickup on highway K47 eleven miles southeast of here around 10 p m Sunday. Fatalities include Richard E Hazen 32 St Paul and Betty Elmore 15 St Paul in Hazen car plus Wilbur F Grant 60 Everton and his passengers, and Bobby Joe Vance 16 Walnut who died later at Neo sho Memorial Hospital.

West German minesweeper unit ends WWII mine cleanup

Bonn reports the navy has abandoned clearing coastal World War II mines after 26 years. About 10,000 mines remain in North and Baltic Sea areas, but deteriorated batteries render old magnetic and acoustic mines inoperative. The program began in 1945 under Allied control, covering 1,400 square miles. the last mine was found and detonated in 1963.
