Doubt grows on Kennedy tax cut action this year
Senator George Smathers says the Senate may not act on President Kennedy s tax cut bill this year. He cites delays in the House and a potential Senate clash over civil rights as blocking factors. He notes hearings could run six to eight weeks with about 200 witnesses, and that Byrd favors consolidating testimony while civil rights debate looms. The House already tentatively approved a two stage net income tax cut of 105 billion dollars to take effect January 1, 1964.
