In Portland a 9,000 pound bulldozer ordered by Barker Excavating Co was left at a vacant lot but later found only its tracks. Police found no Barker Excavating Co or matching address, and Rental City did not locate the company.
Charles C. Johnson Jr the U S Public Health Service administrator for consumer protection and environmental health urged states to join a fight against worsening environmental trends at the National Legislative Conference saying continued pollution could create an irreversible catastrophe for future generations He warned air land and water pollution threatens natural processes essential to life.
Firefighters in St. Louis vote to authorize a city strike as Local 73 demands a $75 bi weekly raise, saying they never accepted the pay plan approved by city officials. Joseph McMahon president of Local 73 notes the demand more than doubles the recent increase.
Pioneer 10, a seven million dollar space probe, failed to reach solar orbit when a Delta rocket veered off course eight minutes after launch from Cape Kennedy Florida. Explosive charges were detonated by safety teams at three down range stations to destroy the booster, sending the craft to wreck in the Atlantic. The mission aimed to study interplanetary space and solar influence on earth weather and communications.
Kustom Electronics Inc started public sale of 350 000 shares at 10 50 bid and 11 50 ask over the counter with Midland Securities as underwriter.
