Fatal Labor Day traffic forecast lowers death toll but cites alcohol risk
The Association of Casualty and Surety Companies estimates 410 deaths on highways over the Labor Day weekend the lowest since 1950 with 135 due to speed and 29 from sleep at the wheel. Over 22 000 drivers and passengers and 3 200 pedestrians could be injured as one in four fatal cases involve alcohol. Three days of auto racing are planned at the Kansas Free Fair in Topeka from September 11 to 18 with races on September 11 17 and 18.

Leg Injury From Bicycle Truck Collision
John York, 16, son of Mr and Mrs Raymond York of 1622 Evergreen, suffered a right leg fracture when his bicycle hit the rear of a truck at 428 South Central. Doctors said both leg bones were fractured above the ankle. Duke McCune and Earl Moore, both of 428 South Central, were in the truck. Moore owned the vehicle.

Death Toll Rises On Pennsylvania Turnpike
Bedford Pa Fifteen years after the four lane turnpike opened traffic deaths this month reached a record seventeen with nearly a week remaining. The prior high was fourteen in December 1950 after the western extension opened. One collision this week killed six when a car crossed the median into another vehicle.

Wolf Attacks Visitor on Farm Porch Near Nebo Missouri
A 25 year old California woman visiting relatives in Missouri was attacked by a wolf on a farm porch. The animal leaped, biting the woman below the eye and injuring her upper lip. Four of the host family’s dogs cornered the wolf, and it was killed by the husband and his father. The woman was treated and released from a Lebanon hospital and a rabies course will begin.

Drivers Escape Injury In Chanute Car Truck Crash
A car driven by H. J. Hempen of Chanute and a two ton truck driven by William Foster of LaHarpe collided on Highway K39 west of Chanute at about 6 10 p m yesterday. The crash occurred on the blind Bunker Hill curve one mile west of the Chanute airport. Sheriff Lee Montgomery and Undersheriff John Phelps investigated. Both vehicles sustained damage to the left side.
