No Interleague Baseball Merger Blocked
Major League Baseball failed to adopt interleague play in 1974 after the tie-breaking vote by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn. The American League backed interleague play while the National League opposed it. Kuhn cited a legal power question but left open casting a future vote. A five member steering committee was created to study baseball matters and report at the winter meetings in Houston. Bud Selig of the Milwaukee Brewers expressed disappointment though not surprised. Charles Bronfman of the Montreal Expos argued interleague play would not boost attendance and cited the World Series as a form of interleague play already in place.
