City commission approves joining the statewide retirement plan for state county and city employees. About 110 Chanute workers would join with 4 percent employee and 5.35 percent employer contributions, funded without raising the tax rate.
Senate Democratic Leader Mansfield said Kennedy administration public school aid bill remains alive in Congress with hope but no strong action. The 2.5 billion bill faces House Rules Committee opposition over economic and religious concerns. Mansfield and others met Kennedy. Rayburn noted ongoing interest among members. The impacted areas bill moved forward in the Senate last week amid doubts about broader action.
The San Leandro City Council voted Monday night to reduce the tax rate for the 14th consecutive year. The rate stood at $1.98 per $100 of assessed valuation in 1948 when the city, then a town of 26 442 residents, began the trend.
Chicago AP report notes a one cent per loaf rise in bread prices may come nationwide due to higher manufacturing costs. American Bakers Association leader E E Kelley Jr warns price increases are likely though he does not confirm the exact figure. He cites the federal $2 wheat support price as a key factor boosting millers and bakers costs.
In Berlin the East German regime sealed West Berlin from entering East Berlin with new permits. Western Allied commanders protested to Soviet commandant Col. Solovyev about violations of four power rules. Mayor Brandt urged a mass protest as border guards fired on escapees.
The United States Britain and France near agreement on retaliatory measures against East Germany for blocking West Berlin refugees. State Department officials say countermeasures will be proposed to governments while warning the Soviet backed move violates East West accords and risks a crisis without Western military intervention.
Five Neosho County Selective Service registrants were called for pre induction physical exams. Paul F. Carroll of St Paul and Milton K. Umbarger of Earlton report to Kansas City for testing, while three others living out of county will report to nearest centers. A separate call for three men to report for induction on August 30 was announced.
Twenty seven travelers arrived by chartered bus, ending a 17 day 4085 mile trek across 18 states and two Canadian provinces. The group, mainly from southeast Kansas, visited Washington Ottawa and Niagara Falls, paying 289.80 each for transport lodging and guides.
About a thousand people attended the Shodeo and large crowds viewed exhibits as Neosho County Fair opened. Gale Mullen reports rain hasn’t deterred attendance though grounds are soggy with pending drying tonight. Livestock entries rise slightly especially in sheep. crop and garden entries dip. Open and junior dairy cattle total 113. 82 sheep 50 hogs 69 beef listed for Tribune. Judging ongoing across crops poultry and livestock with results due later. tonight features a free team pulling contest. Tomorrow includes open and junior judging and a public style revue.
Clearing skies and warmer temperatures followed morning fog with visibility as low as one sixteenth of a mile in Topeka Manhattan and Salina. Highs ranged from 69 at Wichita to 82 at Lawrence. Overnight lows averaged mid to upper 50s, with Wichita showing a two degree spread due to cloud cover. Forecast mostly cloudy and cool tonight and Wednesday with low in the mid 60s and high 75 to 80.
A Neosho County study weighs consolidating districts as Senate Bill 400 sets criteria for unified districts. A planning board with members from each district met and will form sub committees, while outside districts observe potential multi county inclusion. The Chanute district may be closest to meeting the bill’s requirements.
Chanute will be host to a state conference of Alcoholics Anonymous on October 7 and 8. Up to 400 persons, AA members and Al-Anon family groups, are expected to attend. Three sessions are planned for the first day and two for the second day. A noon luncheon and program at the Tioga Hotel will open the conference, with other meetings at the Memorial building.
An Eastern Air Lines crew departed for Havana to service a hijacked U S airliner while Cubans arrived at Key West to take command of a Cuban navy patrol vessel. The exchange, arranged through intermediaries, marks a swap between the United States and Cuba as diplomatic ties remain severed.
The Neosho County budget for 1962 was adopted after a public hearing at the courthouse. Commissioners noted a total levy of 33.16 mills, up 2.15 mills, with new services and lower valuation driving the increase. A retirement fund for county, state, and city employees was created. no petition was filed by July 26 to trigger an election. John Lapham of Chanute and P. W. Kyle of Erie attended the hearing seeking information but offered no protest.
The State Department reports modified martial law in Santa Cruz after Bolivian fighter planes forced down a Constellation cargo plane with four Americans and a Brazilian aboard. A Bolivian fighter pilot died as the cargo plane landed. four U.S. citizens were treated for colds and held on customs violations. Officials await a fuller report from the U.S. Embassy in La Paz.
A 1953 Chrysler driven by 17 year old Jerry Lee Vaughn of 212 North Forest had front damage of 150 dollars after hitting the rear of a 1951 Ford driven by Orie L. Rice of 1109 North Garfield on Grant near Main. Rice backed up to push another car and was struck. Earlier Ernest Abbott reported damage to his car while parked on North Grant or West Walnut by an unknown vehicle.
The United Auto Workers called on Ford Motor Co. members to vote for a strike to gain leverage in contract talks. The move followed Chrysler’s rejection of the proposal to shift production and maintenance workers to salaries, a key 1961 UAW demand. Ken Bannon urged Ford's 125,000 UAW members to back a strike.
