Mrs. Hayes lost their dog Sandy after a defleaing spray caused a ride in the car. A three day search followed until Charles Fussman located Sandy near the Monarch Cement plant and arranged veterinary care. Sandy is recovering from a toe infection as the Fussmans visit.
The Navy announced it will drop 18 000 civilians from payroll, about 4.6 percent of a 389 717 civilian workforce, with most cuts by Oct 31. Secretary Wilson ordered all services to trim civilian payrolls and pursue other economy measures as 60 ships are retired before Dec 30.
Erie crowd gathers for the 84th annual Soldiers and Sailors Reunion supper at George L. Hendricks post American Legion. 900 pounds of beans with bacon, bread, and coffee will be served at 6 p.m. The week features Johnnie Lee Wills and his band, dances, flowering acts, and contest prizes of 10, 7.50, and 5 dollars on Saturday.

Khrushchev left East Berlin stating he was very satisfied with his tour of East Germany and that the visit would tighten the bond with Russia. In Washington the State Department accused him of crude attempts to influence September elections in West Germany, saying his East Germany visit backfired.
The Atomic Energy Commission announced the nuclear test scheduled for 5 a m has been postponed. The notice was issued with no new date provided.
Kansas City police deployed 12 hour shifts to curb crime with 200 officers on night streets. After two nights, Chief Bernard Brannon reported 26.9 percent fewer major crimes than a year earlier and noted plans to expand patrols and checks around homes where women are alone. He urged boosting authorized strength by 200 and requiring written requests for home protection checks.

George M. Humphrey, former secretary of the Treasury, was named board chairman of National Steel Corp in Pittsburgh. A founder of the company in 1927 he had served as a board member and chairman of the executive committee before joining President Eisenhower's Cabinet in 1953.
Sausalito California Patrolman Robert Scheiner directing traffic heard cries for help and found his son Richard Jr. 16 seriously hurt. He had been cut on the left side and arm by an outboard motor propeller and was taken to a hospital.

In Lodz police and troops crushed a three day transport strike. Hundreds of troops occupied streetcar barns and 40 workers were arrested in clashes with police and workers militia. Authorities planned hearings Friday while some strikers faced house arrest as 700000 residents kept moving.
Neosho Memorial Hospital trustees at the regular meeting voted to invest a 50 000 hospital reserve building fund in short term treasury bonds. The move follows a banking department ruling that banks may pay interest on savings accounts held by individuals but not by institutions. The board also approved air conditioning for the hospital lobby and elected changes to the leadership and staff.
