Washington morale grows that September 21 will mark a shift in Nixon anti inflation policy. The president may seek a wage price review board or sector boards via the 18 member Productivity Commission. Officials say a voluntary incomes policy remains possible.
A petition seeks correction and covering of a brackish stagnant rain drain in blocks 1 through 6 of Burghart addition between Rutter and Larson plus a similar 800 block S Garfield issue. Three funding options were outlined by City Manager Sanborn including street improvement costs shared with property owners or city funded drainage districts. The city attorney's recommendation is expected next meeting. Orville Breiner asserts the city aims to fix the problem but fears uncovering more drainage problems.
The Kansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service praised 1971 as one of the state's best ever. Wheat could reach 313 million bushels, surpassing 1952. corn may hit 105 million. sorghum at 227 million. soybeans around 23 million. Hay output is 5.1 million tons. A rainy July boosted yields.

FDA officials called the Bon Vivant recall a failure and began seizing 1.3 million cans to remove dangerous product from shelves. The initial seizure in Bronx netted 45,000 cans as authorities move to prevent diversion while bankruptcy proceedings continue for Bon Vivant of Newark.

Eileen Keys a 16 year old suffered a knee injury and was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a two car crash on East Main near Santa Fe. Dorothy Bartholomew 16 followed too closely and received a summons for careless driving. Damages were estimated at 200 and 350 dollars for the two vehicles and several passengers in Bartholomew’s car were uninjured.
NASA ended months of debate by selecting Dr. Harrison H. Schmitt Harvard trained geologist as the first scientist astronaut on Apollo 17. Commander will be Navy Captain Eugene A. Cernan with Ronald E. Evans as Lunar Orbiter and Evans parachuting duty aboard the command ship. Evans and Joseph Engle KU graduates and 1955 alumni were considered front runners. Engle is married to Mary Lawrence.
Mary T. Brooks of the U S Mint says the Eisenhower silver dollar could yield well over 100 million for the Treasury from a 150 million coin issue. Mass produced uncirculated coins will be sold at 3 each and the $10 proof coins at 12 to 15 overseas, with results uncertain. The project aims to attract collectors while potentially ending silver coinage in the U S.
Four women aged 16 to 20 were arrested in Fort Lauderdale after police found them inside a Burger King with hammers hacksaws knives and forks. They had knocked off the safe door lock and were sawing hinges. The group, former Burger King employees sharing an apartment, faced breaking and entering and attempted grand larceny charges and were jailed.

A NASA source says an acid-like rocket propellant that corrodes nylon may explain the parachute collapse during Apollo 15’s Pacific splashdown. All three chutes deployed. one collapsed as the craft drifted toward splashdown north of Hawaii, speeding the return by about two mph but posing no danger to the astronauts.
