A payroll computer rollout leaves 77 workers unpaid or underpaid on July 18 and 104 on August 1 at the St Louis post office. Officials blame human error for missing time-clock checks, not the computer system itself.
Erie Ann Neely and Paul Alford were named grand champions in the 1969 style revue and best groomed boy contest at the Neosho County fairgrounds show pavilion. Sixty 4H youths modeled garments. judging occurred July 31, with winners announced after the show.
In Norco California a burglar entered the Rev. Robert Erickson's home near St. Mel's Church and exchanged gunfire with the priest. Erickson, 37, was wounded in the leg by a rusty revolver but said he was glad he did not hit the intruder as the burglar escaped.
Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield praised Sen. Fulbright's amendment cutting 45.6 million dollars from the 20 billion dollar military procurement authorization bill. The comment suggested loosening ties between the Pentagon and university research.
Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong Aldrin and Collins described easier than expected movement on the lunar surface and the desire for more time to gather samples. They spoke at a news conference after quarantine, displaying color motion pictures of landing and deployment of instruments, and recalled planting the flag before the Eagle ascent.
City officials residents and property owners will hold a special meeting in Chestnut Malcolm to decide if the block should be paved. Richard Bever aged 12 of 1817 S Highland was rescued from the Neosho River below Brown Wells dam by city firemen at 2 p.m. He clung to a log during the swim party before firemen pulled him to safety. His brother Gary and Mrs Don Simmons family, both listed at 1807 S Highland, were present.
