Fire at a Franklin Kentucky barn owned by Mrs Susie Taylor destroyed the structure. Homer Bates 28 of 801 North Washington was charged in City Court with harassment by telephone after five anonymous calls to a residence. Police traced calls to a pay phone in the 600 block of West Cherry and Bates was arrested and later released on his own recognizance. An arraignment was set for 2:30 p.m. today.
Twelve youths plus two sponsors were at Wilson County State Lake for a Westview Baptist Chapel outing when 12 year old Carlie Wayne Smith drowned near the south edge of the swimming area around 5 30 p.m. Rescue efforts followed after another boy cried for help. Smith died en route to Neosho Memorial Hospital. The Collins boys, Clyde Jr. and Jerry, survived with non life threatening conditions. Funeral services are planned at Gibson Koch Chapel.
Judy Holtzman was crowned 2nd Annual Thayer Watermelon Festival queen by Gov. Robert Docking in City Park after a 3:30 p.m. ceremony. Becky Duff and Carla Rutledge were named princesses amid talks by FPM and ORC organizers and a free watermelon feed followed.
