City workers in Santa Fe Park lay iron standards for children’s swings in a northeast section. Swings await dry concrete setting before use. A slippery slide for the playground has been ordered.
Former baseball commissioner A B Happy Chandler leads the Kentucky Democratic gubernatorial race as returns from about half the precincts come in. Bert Combs and Jesse Cecil trail, with Combs’ camp hoping for a narrow margin and Chandler’s HQ predicting a victory trend.
Two Ft. Riley officers died in a small private plane crash near Manhattan on Saturday night. Warrant Officers Leroy J. Hobertz 33 Hamilton Texas and Richard J. Redmond 22 Akron Ohio formerly, were helicopter pilots in the 93rd Transportation Company. The plane reportedly nosedived after a 90 degree turn after takeoff from Manhattan Municipal Airport.
Hurricane Connie with 185 mile per hour winds churned 500 miles east of West Palm Beach as it moves toward a potential rendezvous with an eastward trough that could push it away from land.
Rep George of Kas. calls for an expanded highway program and water conservation to be tackled in the next Congress. He notes Senate approval of Gore's highway bill and House votes on tax funding, and urges bond financing as urged by Eisenhower. He cites Toronto Dam plans on Verdigris River and possible Strawn Dam and a new Big Hill Creek Reservoir site, seeking substantial future appropriations and planning funds.
Formosan sanitary engineer Kuan Nu Yao of Taipei Formosa spent a year in the United States studying water and sewage plants in small towns. Accompanied by Herman A. Janzen, he inspected facilities in about 15 states and studied at the University of North Carolina under a Rockefeller Foundation grant. He notes Formosa’s push to build a modern army and praises American help while describing local customs and Formosan agriculture. He plans to remain in Wichita this week and return home next month to advance sanitation work on the island.
FBI probes the kidnap murder of Wilma Cookus Allen. Clarence Moody and family mourn at her North Kansas City home. Born 1921 Osage City she married William R. Allen Jr. in Burlington and later lived in Chanute Tulsa and Kansas City. Her husband runs Bill Allen Chevrolet.
President Eisenhower told the opening session of the International Conference on Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy that atomic science is the newest and most promising tool to improve human life and to combat war. He urged governments and global business and professional groups to cooperate and apply the science for health and development.
Three Kansas residents die in Missouri crashes over the weekend. Walter Metz 65 and Richard Lee Sharp 20 both of Leavenworth Kansas die in a two car collision near Lamar along with Nadine Harper 51 and Fern Woods 39 both of Butler Missouri. Page Harper 55 husband of Nadine Harper is critically injured. Harry Eugene Bedgood 31 of Wichita dies from a broken neck after his motorcycle leaves the road near Seligman Missouri. A separate collision west of Boonville injures seven people including three children. Dale Waters and three children of Wichita ride in one car while Frank Miller in Brooklyn New York travels in the other.
Police investigated three non injury mishaps Sunday. A collision on East Main about 8:50 p.m. damaged the rear of a car driven by Bobby Lee Moran Earlton and the front of a coupe driven by Earl Stanlick Chanute. A Walnut and Franklin collision damaged Mrs Webb H. Barnes 703 S Central and Olive Mae Mason Humboldt cars as Barnes turned from Franklin to Walnut. The third incident near West Main involved Kenneth L. Collins 306 S Central whose car skid on a damp surface and overturned.
The Rev. William E. West will resign as Grace Episcopal Church rector and become pastor of St. Matthew’s in Pampa Texas starting September 1. His last service in Grace will August 28 after three years there. The West family plans to move to Pampa around Sept. 1.
Oswego Meat Packing & Storage Co completed incorporation in the secretary of state’s office. Forest Hovel named resident agent with $15,000 authorized capital. Located in Oswego.
City council negotiates with Car ruthers Construction Co. Paola after lowering a bid to fit funds. A $35,500 approved package includes water tower work and main connections, with Derby Construction Co. already signed for a new tank. All costs covered by a $90,000 revenue bond issue as the tank is planned for this fall or winter.
Warmer trend expected with highs in the 90s and lows 65 to 70 as a hot spell eases. Thunderstorms brought heavy rain to northeast Kansas with Holton recording up to 3.75 inches. Hutchinson 0.58, Hillsboro 0.56, and traces at Olathe Emporia Dodge City.
Mrs. Helen Prater aged 52 of St. Louis died in Topeka yesterday from injuries suffered in a two year old accident near Grantville on Saturday.
Mr and Mrs Clifford Bock and Janet of Aledo Illinois are visiting Mr and Mrs F E Chard at 1003 8 Grant Street.
Sen Lyndon B Johnson who suffered a heart attack July 2 has made steady improvement and returned to his Washington home yesterday. A note requests Tribune readers in case they miss the paper to call a listed number between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. including Saturdays.
FBI joins hunt for Wilma Allen killer after her nude body is found in a Johnson County pasture. Police probe kidnapping theory with possible sex motive and robbery, while examining her missing rings and purse. An autopsy is inconclusive and a minor suspect is questioned as 200 officers search near Union Station and Blue River.
Topeka Kansas records show 316 traffic fatalities in 1955 to date and 220 in the same period of 1954. The State Accident Records Section lists fatalities for the last 48 hours.
