A Buffalo woman hires Carl Haight of the Pioneer store to install cooling in her bedroom not for herself but for her 17 year old dog Tinkle. The unit is installed while birds and goats feature in Chanute community notes with a visiting child and goats at Santa Fe Park.
An International truck carrying water tipped on its side about 8:30 PM three miles east and a mile south of Chanute. Driver Rex Grove of rural Chanute and owner Larry Greve, with Greve’s family, escaped injury as Undersheriff Don Harding investigated the scene.

Police logged several traffic incidents yesterday. Richard W. Tomlinson, 18, of 1521 S. Ashby, driving a 1956 Chevrolet, caused $250 damage to Willard Solomon’s 1956 Pontiac after stopping in the lane at 321 W. 14th. Solomon’s car sustained right rear damage. Tomlinson claimed the accelerator stuck. A woman, Pat Bailey of Chanute, reported a rear collision at Lincoln and Main with damage to tail pipe and bumper. the other driver fled. Glen Lacey, 227 E. 11th, said a 1963 Pontiac had its right front fender damaged sometime Monday night.
Kansas unemployment remained steady at 1.7 percent in the week ending August 1, with 1.7 percent of those covered by unemployment compensation unemployed. The rate matches the prior week and is down from 1.9 percent a year earlier, per the Kansas Employment Security Division.

A high order explosion wrecked the interior of a drive-in restaurant in east central Kansas City early today. The shop was closed. damage was about 1000 dollars. Police cited no fire and ruled out gas. Owner Melvin Rolsky had reopened the site after a driverless truck crash two months earlier.

In Walnut Grove township Neva L Ermey defeated Clara A Morgan for Republican committeewoman. In Chanute two city offices went to Republican nominees Richard L Ashley for city court judge and Merrill Moore for city court marshal. Official canvass by county officials to be held tomorrow at the Erie courthouse. County Clerk Virgil Lowe notes only six in state absentee ballots received so far with next Tuesday deadline pending.
In Greensburg Kansas Scott Ernst 15 and helpers Scott Puyear 16 and Ernie Acre 16 dived into a 15 foot deep well at a tourist site billed as the world’s largest hand dug well. Acre surfaced with the glasses after 45 minutes in cold stagnant water and the boys refused a recovery reward while Puyear found pennies.
