U S B52 bombers conducted their seventh strike, dropping 500 tons in a 45 minute raid on Viet Cong installations in Quang Tin province about 350 miles northwest of Saigon. The Doxa area near Kontum was targeted from Guam bases.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower voiced disappointment with the United Nations position on South Viet Nam during a Wisconsin vacation. He urged support for President Johnson to use available facts to shape world opinion and warned against opposition during crisis. He spoke while leaving Woodruff for Gettysburg after a 13 day lakes region visit.
The first nuclear vessel named for a Black person will be christened August 14 by Marian Anderson. The Polaris submarine USS George Washington Carver honors the scientist known for synthetic products from peanuts and sweet potatoes. Launching will be by Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co.
S Sgt Dale E Worley, son of Mr and Mrs R D Worley, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by United States Military Assistance Command in Vietnam for heroism on December 28 1964. Stationed in Okinawa, Worley and his patrol came under heavy fire in Vietnam and he treated wounded under fire as a Medical Corps member, earning high praise in the official orders dated March 25 1965 from the APO in San Francisco.
A wheel detached from a jalopy during the national championship races struck two 9 year old boys in Hutchinson Kansas. One boy was killed and the other critically injured. Driver Herb Copeland 25 of Dodge City collapsed upon learning the death. Roy Bryant of Wichita won the race championship for the third straight year.
Fair weather dominates Kansas with little temperature change through Tuesday. Lows tonight in the 60s, highs Tuesday near 90. Topeka readings reach mid 60s to 70s with Garden City and Wa lenge seeing highs near 89. Morning lows range from the low 50s to upper 60s across cities.
Rain began in drought hit Northeast as fronts rolled in soaking areas from the Middle Atlantic to New York. Bush Dam in northern Pennsylvania recorded 2.85 inches in 40 minutes as Salisbury Maryland’s 12 hour total rose to about 42 inches. Florida and the southern Rockies saw thunderstorms. Farmington New Mexico reported a half inch. The Weather Bureau predicted 2 to 3 more inches in the Hudson River Valley today.

Kansas traffic death log lists counts for 48 hours to 9 am Monday 4 August 1965 and 1 July with totals 60 compared with 356 in 1964 and 366 in 1965.
Reports of unidentified flying objects alarmed observers across Texas New Mexico Oklahoma and Kansas with sightings in Wichita Canyon Caldwell and Wellington. Radar tracked objects up to 22000 feet while witnesses described red green blue and white colors and diamond shaped formations. The Air Force noted many sightings proved balloons birds or misidentified phenomena with 667 still unidentified from prior checks.
Chanute police blotter chronicles a busy weekend including a high speed chase beginning at Santa Fe Park with Robert Harmon 24 fleeing after a parole violation. He later wrecked two stolen cars and remained in critical condition in Clayton New Mexico. Earlier incidents included a weekend string of traffic crashes and a reported stolen company car.
Deputy Secretary Cyrus R. Vance told a House subcommittee the Pentagon will give special attention to three Army Reserve divisions six independent brigades and related units to raise readiness for a possible call up. McNamara outlined a plan to merge the Reserves into the National Guard and cut total authorized strength from 700000 to 575000 amid Viet Nam tensions.
The 1965 Woodson county fair opened in Yates Center with open class horse judging at 9 a.m. A parade and a rodeo sponsored by the Yates Center Rodeo Club are on the program for tonight at 7 o'clock. The fair runs through Wednesday.
The United Steelworkers Union says it mailed notices to major steel producers announcing termination of the current contract at midnight August 31. The wage policy committee voted August 1 to serve the notice under an interim contract from April 28. If no new deal is reached, about 450,000 workers could strike in a 116 day walkout. President I W Abel said no extension will be granted.

Western negotiators at the 17 nation disarmament conference plan a draft treaty to curb nuclear spread. The proposal would allow NATO to pursue a nuclear force while keeping US and UK weapons under national control and veto power. Non nuclear nations would aid in planning and be consulted on use, with Soviet objections noted but not blocking the draft. The treaty would ban nuclear powers from sharing weapons or know how with others and curb non nuclear states from manufacturing weapons. The draft is to be submitted mid August under four nations with West Germany’s backing.
