James Burl Sears and his wife Freda May of Zurich escaped injury when their 1957 Ford collided with a Katy freight train at a crossing on highway K47 two miles south of Urbana. Sears said he saw the train from the east at about 50 mph and braked, the car skidding into the locomotive and tipping over. The 20 car freight continued to Urbana as crews waited for a relief engine due to a broken gauge on the locomotive fuel tanks.
Unfavorable winds force a 24 hour delay of the 11th shot in the United States summer atomic test series at the test site in Nevada. The test is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
Law officers from Neosho and Montgomery Counties raided the Jones farm near Joplin to locate items linking Mrs. Lucille Jones to forged checks tied to a Chanute case. Officials planned to compare belongings with purchases on the Coffeyville checks and verify her statements amid her emotional distress. Mrs. Jones and her husband face a $48 check charge and a preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday.

The weather bureau notes August will bring light moisture and above normal temperatures. yesterday’s highs ranged from 90 at Olathe to 98 at Salina and lows from 64 at Goodland to 78 at Kansas City.
Claude Vanatta, 65, was found dead yesterday in a field on his Garnett area farm. Officials say a truck and tractor were in motion with a tow chain around the rear axle, suggesting the tractor started suddenly after Vanatta had trouble starting it and hooked the truck to the machine.

An H21 helicopter from Fort Riley crashed from about 400 feet during a routine training flight near U S 40 east of the post. Warrant Officer Walter E. Seven teen cars of a Katy freight train derailed on the Middle Creek Bridge eight miles south of Osawatomie Kas no injuries reported Traffic detoured over Frisco lines via Fort Scott until the line is cleared the Katy spokesman said.

Benji a 150 pound St Bernard won a 10 day stay of execution from Circuit Judge Sam Street Hughes. The dog had been sentenced to death by Justice of the Peace Raymond Lotte. Chris Briethaupt of Lansing, 59, required 24 stitches after an attack by the dog. A later circuit court hearing will decide if the stay becomes permanent.
Fire Chief and Civil Defense Director Joe Hutchinson suffered severe burns when gasoline vapors ignited in the Ark City city hall basement. He was pouring gasoline from a container into a motor when fumes were ignited by a nearby water heater.
A Coast Guard helicopter landed on a Cascade meadow in windy conditions to rescue New York climber Mrs. Richard Noyes who collapsed in a diabetic coma. She was flown 100 miles to Seattle for hospital care. Lt Cmdr D W Defreest piloted the 150 mile flight from Port Angeles to the meadow 23 miles northeast of Lake Chelan after a distress call.
In a dramatic chase, Lawrence Albert Jackman kidnapped his divorced wife Roenie Lois Rich and stabbed her eight times with an ice pick after a roadblock stopped his car near Junction City. Rich, 22, was listed in satisfactory condition. Jackman, 25, a Hutchinson taxi driver, was captured and jailed.
