Santa Fe Railway Co announces R. E. McCord transfers to Topeka as division freight agent replacing retiree A. Brice Fleming after 46 years. McCord’s successor is Dale Eggleston from Lawrence, arriving today to assume duties in Chanute. Eggleston, 32 years with Santa Fe, previously transportation superintendent for Hercules Powder at Sunflower Plant.
Clarence Walters of Chanute and Edd Noland suffered first and second degree burns when a lighter caused a flash fire at a gas well north of Odense. The well was being drilled by A H Alcock Drilling Co. of Chanute, not by Consolidated Oil Wells Service as initially reported. Walters and Noland, partners in Consolidated Oil Wells Service, were at the site for service checks. Walters is mobile, while Noland remains homebound.
The Hall Shaw race over right to work will feature Shaw opening and the first rebuttal. The debate will air from Wichita at 9 30 p m Friday on six TV stations and 22 radio outlets across Kansas. City and campus reporters observed the straw draw to assign speaking order.
Sen Estes Kefauver withdrew from the Democratic presidential race, boosting Adlai E. Stevenson's prospects for the nomination on an early convention ballot. Gov Averell Harriman claimed improved odds, and Kefauver urged delegates to unite behind Stevenson as Chicago convention opens. Stevenson’s team said a first-ballot win is very likely.
Opal Hess, 24, wife of Dean Hess, pastor of a Herrington Nazarene church, was found dead in a strip pit near Broken Arrow Oklahoma after drowning during a swim with her husband. The couple had been visiting relatives and were pulled from the water after he lost sight of her on an inner tube.
Bridge worker Patrick Forester, 39, of Kansas City, suffered a 30 foot fall when a wooden ladder collapsed under him while reinforcing a steel rod on a Kansas urnpike bridge over Highway K32 near City Park. He was taken to Providence Hospital.
In the last 24 hours the State Accident Records Section lists 2 fatalities, to date in 1956 there have been 351, compared with 314 in the same period in 1955.
The Neosho County budget proposes a total levy of 30 643 with expenditures of 1 637 455.41 up from 1 487 247.53. Major increases occur in road and bridge welfare general county elementary school and hospital funds. Public hearing set for Aug 13 and Aug 21 for tax commission approval to exceed the levy limit.
Chanute officials report bids for the Kansas National Guard Armory will be sought in Topeka during September. The project now costs about 110000, covered by state and federal funds. Chanute’s share remains 55000 from a spring bond issue. The site lies near Santa Fe Park.
In Buford Georgia an inquiry was ordered after 27 white and 14 Black convicts injured their legs at the Rock Quarry Prison during a 30 minute rest period. Thirty six prisoners were examined at Reidsville Hospital with eight plus having compound fractures. State Senator D B Blalock will chair a public hearing at the prison tomorrow and urges complaints about the facility.
A freight train collided with a passenger train in Rio de Janeiro today, killing 17 people and injuring about 100. Rescue teams worked at the scene as investigators began examining the cause of the fatal accident.
The Associated Press reports Kansas Republicans Gov. Fred Hall and Warren W. Shaw traded harsh accusations in TV speeches in Great Bend and Topeka. Hall charged Shaw with deceit and opposes his spending stance while Shaw attacks Hall as disruptive to state government. Democratic candidate Harry Woodring spoke of a highway land-rights racket in Olathe. James Putnam urged using volunteer National Guardsmen to enforce traffic laws in Manhattan.
Lieutenant Governor John McCuish, Republican and former Newton publisher, visited Chanute yesterday during the final week of his bid for a second term. He declined to predict results and quipped that he supports Eisenhower and McCuish in the Kansas races.
Albert Woolson the last Union Army veteran of the Civil War showed signs of weakening early today at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth Minnesota according to attendants.
Frank D. Kinnie, chief engineer of eastern lines for the Santa Fe Railway, retired Tuesday at age 70 after 47 years with the road. He supervised numerous grade revision projects across Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma and plans to move from Topeka to Prairie Village on September 1.
President Eisenhower said Vice President Nixon is acceptable but he will not foreclose other candidates for the Republican ticket. He declined to name a preferred running mate, noting he is not renominated and has not altered prior statements about Nixon.
