Mrs. Jo Ann Berry 21 of Wichita and her son Earl drowned when a motor boat went over a 15 foot dam on the Little Arkansas River near downtown Wichita Saturday. Earl W. Berry Sr. 19 an airman at McConnell AFB and Harold H. Willson 27 survived and were treated for shock and exposure.
Keith Up son of Caney is the new president of the Kansas Junior Chamber of Commerce. Officers named at the convention include international director William Spencer and national directors Dave Hicks Bill Lipscomb and Dave Carson. District vice presidents span cities from Hill City to Iola with Topeka chosen for next year’s convention.
Five members of the Future Farmers of America Chapter at Senior High School accompanied by vocational agricultural instructor Charles O. Carter Jr. traveled to Manhattan to compete in state agricultural judging contests at Kansas State College. The group includes Ronald Burk Freddie Markham Richard Fairchild Craig Thompson and Ronnie Poor. The program began today and will continue through Tuesday.
U S State Department says it has not offered to mediate the dispute between Honduras and Nicaragua. Officials noted a press report quoting a Honduran communique rejecting mediation by the United States and Central American group, suggesting possible misinterpretation of an unofficial document.
Thieves broke into the Standard Oil filling station at 517 S Ninth Humboldt last night and escaped with 84.15 dollars. Sheriff B F Lorance reported the money included 9 dollars in change and rest in tens fives and ones. No merchandise was reported missing. Entry was by window breakage and a screwdriver used on the cash register.
Clyde Tilley aged 32 from Durham North Carolina died when his semi trailer overturned on a curve on U S 166 about half a mile west of Caney Kansas Saturday night.
Little rain is forecast for Kansas with a stationary front over Arkansas and Texas bringing clouds and light rain to southeastern Kansas. Temperatures are expected 6 to 12 degrees above normal with highs near 70 and lows in the 40s.
The Kansas Bar Assn annual convention in Wichita closed with the election of officers for one year. O B Edison Topeka was named president and Jay W Scovel Independence president-elect with William M Beall Clay Center as vice president. George B Powers Wichita was re elected secretary treasurer. Executive council members include Clayton M Davis Topeka Joe F Balch Chanute William M Ferguson Wellington Alexander M Fromme Hoxie and Leo A McNally Minneapolis. Kansas Bar Foundation trustees named Walter G Thiele Topeka L J Bond El Dorado Robert G Braden Wichita E Chalfant Hutchinson James E Taylor Sharon Springs. A proposed uniform code to speed civil actions in state district courts was under consideration.
Senator Kennedy told the U S Chamber of Commerce that deep cuts to the foreign aid budget would cost taxpayers money rather than save it. He said foreign aid is not the grand economic handout some envision, addressing the convention's first general session amid expected talks on government spending.

The city commission awarded insulation work for the municipal electric plant to Kelley Asbestos Products Co of Kansas City for 7993 dollars after a 1000 dollar increase from the original bid. Other bids included Joplin Cement Co 8971 Kansas City Installation Co 9945 and Jamar Omen Construction Co 10789.
A two year old girl, Jackie R. Walker, died after being struck by a truck in Wichita. The vehicle was driven by 18 year old Robert R. Walker, a cousin, who backed from a driveway as the child wandered into the street. Police reported head injuries.
AFL-CIO President George Meany refused Beck’s bid for a negotiated panel to discuss Beck’s suspension as an AFL-CIO officer. Beck sought a five man committee to confer with another group before the May 20 corruption hearing. Meany will forward the request to the AFL-CIO Council and allow Beck a chance to present his case at the May session.
Agriculture Department reports Kansas farmers earned 125.632 million dollars from farm marketings in January and February this year, down from 125.88 million the same period in 1955. Livestock receipts rose to 79.061 million from 74.311 million, while crop income fell to 46.571 million from 51.569 million.
David Eisenhower was made an honorary member of Boy Scout Troop 46 at Mitchel Field Long Island. Nassau County Scouts presented a scarf merit badge and tenderfoot pin for the 9 year old, plus a plaque naming the President and Mrs Eisenhower as honorary scout parents. Earl Chesney received the delegation at the White House in the absence of David and his grandparents.

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Negroes may not be excluded from Philadelphia's Guard College as long as public officials administer the will creating the school for poor white orphan boys. Senator McCarthy lies in serious condition at Bethesda Naval Hospital with acute hepatitis.
Construction of a new Southwestern Bell work center and vehicle storage building begins at Seventh and Forest in Chanute. A. E. Endres said the one story 25 by 25 foot light masonry structure will be built by Wayne Line Construction Co. of Cherryvale, with completion expected in July and total cost about 9500 dollars.
Marvin Dean Bruns aged 19 from Wathena Kansas died from a motorcycle car collision on U S 36 a quarter mile west of the Pony Express Bridge after the crash occurred last night. He did not regain consciousness and died today.

A hitchhiker identified as William Spitzner reported losing a billfold with about 600 dollars after a ride by two women in a 1951 Pontiac. Police traced the relatives of a deceased family to Chanute and located the women, returning the billfold to Spitzner.
A gasoline spill in the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau Missouri ignited a barge five miles upriver. The barge broke loose, floated toward docks belching flames and smoke, then grounded after muffled explosions. An oil company spokesman blamed a ruptured hose line and a downstream motorboat cigarette.
The charred body found in a plane wreck northeast of San Antonio has been identified as Henry Maddox 37 of Asbury Missouri. The Civil Aeronautics Administration called off the search after identification. Maddox a restaurant and filling station owner had been missing since he left San Antonio last Wednesday. The wreckage was found by rancher Arnold Reed near Bracken Texas and the body will be returned to Asbury.
The State Accident Records Section lists fatalities in the last 48 hours and year to date. For 1957 the totals are 1 in 48 hours and 162 year to date, compared with 192 in the same period of 1956.
Five persons died in a crash about 15 miles northeast of Springfield on U S 66. A brand new hardtop going 100 to 110 mph left the four lane, vaulted 54 feet, and struck a utility pole. Victims include Vernon Bateman 22 and cousins James Pettigrew 17 William Rex Pettigrew 16 Howard Tannehill 21 Dwaine Tracy 18 all of Marshfield area.
Kilmer reception center at Camp Kilmer New Jersey closes to new refugees. The camp housed about 30 000 Hungarians since late 1940s with a peak 2044 arrivals in one day February 15. Remaining refugees will move to St George Hotel in Brooklyn starting May 1 and others will be housed there on arrival.

Earl Ard of Chanute died when a falling machine part struck him during Santa Fe Railway bridge crew pile driving near Longton. Ard, 63, was married to Lois Maxwell and survived by a daughter, three grandchildren, a sister and a brother. Services by Roy S. Gibson Funeral Home.
Senior High School students in the state music festival at Emporia earned No II ratings. Participants included Anita Weber and Alice Hazen in vocal solos Sam Morford with a tuba solo and the boys quartet of Morford McMurray Harris and Boydston. Accompanists were Boydston McCune and Loveall.
Former President Harry S. Truman told a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee that drastic reductions in foreign aid would be a bad thing. He said the objective is world peace and preventing another world war, addressing six members under Chairman Carnahan.
Democratic National Chairman Paul Butler says President Dave Beck of the Teamsters was long coddled by the Eisenhower administration. Butler described Beck as a friend with ready entrance to the White House, in reply to Eisenhower's call for legislation to safeguard union funds.
