Local youngsters locate a missing parakeet named Skipper and return it to the Burdette home after a mix up in early reports about a fire. Fire crews responded to alarms that traced to a pest fog from a city spraying machine, not a blaze.
Forecast calls for fair conditions tonight and Friday with overnight low temps in the 30s and highs in the upper 70s. A squall line in Kansas yesterday sparked showers hail and tornado funnels near multiple towns, with Holton Soldier Onaga Blue Rapids and Manhattan among those reporting precipitation and hail.
Neosho County Red Cross directors will meet at the Memorial Building to decide the future of the blood program as funds fall short. The drive raised about 7200 of the 9981 goal, with annual costs around 2500, and donors again gave small contributions amid rising costs.
Boosters for the Spring Farm Show will depart at 9 a.m. tomorrow in a motor car caravan from the Wickard-Mall lot in South Santa Fe. Fifteen businesses sponsor the trip through a Chamber of Commerce plan. They will visit Buffalo, Roper, Benedict, Thayer, Galesburg, Erie, St. Paul, Walnut, Hepler, Stark, Lavonburg, Elsmore, Moran, LaHarpe and Humboldt.

In Everett Washington a fast streamliner forced into a 2440 foot tunnel. Five boys aged 14 and 15 ducked into a muddy ditch just before the train arrived. Police and fire crews arrived too late to stop the engine. After a stern lecture the boys were returned to their parents for further action.
Mayor Charles Rice said no site has been chosen yet for the Kansas National Guard Armory here, with five locations under review and inspections planned. Adj. Gen. Joe Nickell noted a site should cover at least 34 acres and have gas water electric access and good roads. A proposed ordinance would issue 55 000 in bonds to cover the city share of 5 000 for site purchase and 50 000 for construction of a 90 000 building with federal and state funds totaling 40 000.
Carl Pate president of the Chanute Chamber and Gordon Miller district representative for Socony Vacuum Oil were recognized for distinguished participation and meritorious service to the Oil Industry Information Committee in 1954. The Chamber earned a state certificate for distinguished participation as part of seven organizations honored.
A headon collision 20 miles west of Hutchinson, Kansas, left Ivan Leighty 40 dead. His wife Nadine 33 and hitchhiker Carl Cameron of Lake Charles Louisiana were critically injured, while Jesse S. Esparza of Arkansas City sustained cuts and bruises. Police reported the crash occurred between 5 20 and 6 30 pm.
State Highway Commission lists multiple road projects in southeastern Kansas including 18 miles of bituminous surfacing and 185 miles of maintenance resurfacing on state and county routes. A new K939 location near Hiattville extends 3.8 miles with subgrade work and surfacing. West 14th North Plummer upgrades include a 190 foot three span bridge across Village Creek and two box bridges.
Allen resigns as head track and assistant basketball and football coach at Senior High School to become head basketball and track coach at Peabody. His wife plans to teach at Peabody while Allen returns to Chanute often. No replacement is named. vacancy calls for an assistant coach and social science or English teacher.
Dr. Dean Gough, Neosho county health officer, assures parents that Cutter Laboratories polio vaccine is not used in the county and the vaccination program proceeds. First and second graders began shots in Erie with follow ups in St. Paul Chanute and Thayer.
M L Manners 319 W Sixth retired April 2 as an automotive mechanic with the State Highway Commission. He began with the state July 1 1939 moving here from Parsons where he ran an automotive repair service. He would have completed 16 years this July. A fourth division shop employee group gave him a fishing outfit and lunch kit upon retirement. fishing is his hobby.
ERIE reports indicate all but three townships have sent assessments and most assessors will finish this week. Sunday is the legal deadline for 1955 assessments. Chanute’s last business report arrived today as the board of equalization sets May 16 to 25 for hearings.
The ninth grade production of A Dance with Our Miss Brooks opens tonight and tomorrow at the Junior High School auditorium under Mariam Leatherman. A double cast will perform each night as the opening event of the two week Fine Arts Festival. Cast includes Shook Meyer Berry Sandberg Kelly Harris Leslie Turner Oliver Marts Close Biele McCall Weaver McCune Godinez Fickel Fargo Burdge Tabor.
An American B29 bomber crashed three miles from Naha airport in overcast conditions. Ten bodies were recovered with no confirmed crew list. Four Okinawans were burned and hospitalized as wreckage scattered over a 400 yard area during a radar controlled approach.
The Interior Department issued an emergency order halting a planned May 3 opening of a 65 000 acre area near Kaycee Wyoming known as a tinderbox for uranium. Gov Milward Simpson described gun toting in the Pumpkin Buttes area as ranchers and prospectors clash over land access. The order postpones the land opening indefinitely while private landowners and prospectors are informed of rights in the area.
A county wide dairy tour is set to begin at the Erie courthouse at 1 p.m. next Monday. County agricultural agent Mahlon Morley, with Kansas State College extension staff Ralph Bonewitz and George Gerber, will accompany participants. Stops include Hugh Means farm near Erie, Bill Hudson farm near Shaw, Jake Sanders farm southwest of Frie, and Leo Fickel farm near Urbana to view grade A dairies, Jersey and Holstein herds, and an artificial breeding program.
The Public Health Service announced 106 new polio cases from 47 states last week, down from 217 nationwide in the comparable week a year earlier. New Mexico’s report had not yet arrived.
