Neighbors host a shower for the Harding couple at the Kimball Grade School basement on Thursday evening with cookies and coffee. The Harding home, 24 miles west of Kimball, was destroyed by a Saturday morning fire after a lightning strike.
An underground water tunnel blast in Northboro Mass killed one worker and injured eight others. Twenty two men were trapped 400 feet down for over 30 minutes before rescue teams pulled them to the surface. The metropolitan district engineer said the workers were injured in a dynamite explosion at the working face. The deceased was Ronald MacDonald of Roxbury Boston.
Memorial Building meeting of the Community Council drew 11 members who urged backing a city wide cleanup. They voted to write to the city manager to amplify nuisance problems such as loose animals littering and dumping at highway entrances. Joe Lewis reported on a United Fund drive named Chanute United Fund with incorporation in progress. The council invites the city manager and councilors to the next meeting on May 23.
Cuban radio reported two men were executed in Matanzas Province for attempting to join anti-C Castro forces during the failed invasion. Fifty others were jailed for the same offense, while 67 more invaders were captured and eight planners arrested amid renewed fighting in Las Villas. The broadcast also noted the Cuban charge d affaires in Panama was recalled.
Robert A. Finney of Humboldt Kansas was reelected a director of the U S Chamber of Commerce. The mail ballot elected 15 of 18 Kansas City district directors, and the new board will take office at the annual meeting in Washington starting Sunday.
Topeka AP reports a group of Highway Patrol lieutenants are taking a three day examination for possible promotions. Participants include James Martin of Salina Robert Perkins and Charles Hall of Chanute Galer Bennett of Norton and Cecil Johnson of Garden City.
An eight year old boy, Roger Brown, son of Mr and Mrs George Brown of 325 S Western, suffered bruises and abrasions to his left arm and leg after being struck by a car around noon yesterday at 3rd and Western. Police said the boy ran in front of a car driven by Eugene Cornish, 46, of the Kay Hotel.
The city commission postponed action on a third municipal dam on the Neosho for two weeks by a 2 to 1 vote with Lapham and Althaber supporting delay while Evans voted no. Plans for the Brown-Wells ford dam and recreation area were approved earlier by the water resources board.
An empty oil barge exploded on the Mississippi River bridge in Baton Rouge causing two holes in the westbound lane and a fire from an oil slick. No fatalities were reported as traffic was halted, then partially reopened after four hours. The barge was among five towed by the Ole Miss. the tug began to sink and crew relocated to another tug.
In Algiers loyal to President Charles de Gaulle crushed a four day mutiny led by Gen Maurice Challe. Challe surrendered to face trial for insurrection while three allied generals and three colonels also face charges. The uprising abruptly ended after four days of tension and drone-like quiet.
Monte Wisdom, a 41 year old painter from Saint Joseph, Missouri, says he will return his state driver license to Jefferson City when released from a 180 day jail sentence for drunken driving. He has sold his car and notes ten prior convictions in seven years, adding he will not drive after drinking and plans to abstain from alcohol.
Fire last night destroyed the modern two story home of Mr and Mrs Paul Anderson R 1 and much of its contents. Anderson suffered burns while removing articles and was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital in satisfactory condition. Chanute firemen and neighbors saved major appliances and bedding but water supply hampered their efforts. The home near Vilas cemetery was struck by fire at 9 45 p m and crews stayed until 2 20 a m with cause believed to be a fireplace and burned boxes earlier.
Three Chanute bankers and a fourth from Thayer will attend a Kansas Association of Bank Agricultural Representatives meeting in Salina tomorrow and Friday. Attendees include Mahlon Morley and Jim Benton of First National Bank Chanute, John Gorton of Bank of Commerce Chanute, and Melvin Morley of First National Bank Thayer. The agenda features dairy farm, beef ranch and soil conservation tours and a visit to the Malm irrigation farm at Lindsborg.
The United States expands its airlift to pro Western Laotian government troops amid reports of fresh Communist attacks. Six C130 transports carry supplies from the Philippines in Operation Hotshot as impasse prospects loom before Geneva talks.
Gov. John Anderson named six Republicans to the reorganized Kansas Armory Board. New appointees include Col. Kenneth H. Peters and Lt. Col. Hilary J. Wentz. Cal vin E. Barry to 2nd district. Mahlon S. Wood to 3rd. Woodrow W. Good win to 4th. Jonas D. Conderman to at large. Roy B. Darlington named judge of probate juvenile and county courts for Butler County. Albert Karl named to the Apprenticeship Council succeeding Joe S. Pucci.
Air Force Secretary Eugene Zuckert said a decision on buying Helio Aircraft Corp. light planes may come soon. The Pittsburg Kansas company has developed a short takeoff and landing propeller plane, and the Air Force has studied the matter amid questions from Senator Schoeppel during a Senate hearing.
Three Erie men were injured in an intersection collision four miles southeast of here. John W. White 47 Ira White 54 and Jim Culbertson 52 were involved. Culbertson was hospitalized while the Whites received treatment and were released. Mason 46 of rural Galesburg driving the station wagon was uninjured. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
TOPEKA AP reports Kansas traffic log shows 33 fatalities in April, 145 for 1960, and 110 for the comparable 1960 period, reflecting 24 hour totals up to 9 am Wednesday.
Chanute JayCees and Chamber of Commerce report second annual Spring Farm and Home Show May 12 and 13 near the National Guard Armory. Thirty four booths, new car displays, outdoor farm implement dealers, and two work nights May 10 11 to ready the facility. Election of officers May 9 and plans include an Inaugural Ball and a Baseball Special to Kansas City on Aug 20.
A three-year-old boy, Brian Keith Schroll, drowned Monday in an irrigation ditch at his farm home west of Syracuse Kansas. He was the son of Mrs. Luther Schroll.
Washington AP report shows consumer price index at 127.5 from 1947-49, 1.4 percent above a year earlier. Food costs held steady while housing and recreation rose. fuel, gas, milk and apparel may ease in April. Factory worker earnings rose about 65 cents to 80.89 weekly. eggs and other groceries dropped due to higher supplies, though egg prices remain above year ago under union contracts.
Dr Wayne Frantz of Lola was elected president of the Kansas Optometric Association at the meeting in Wichita on Tuesday.
Strong storms swept central and eastern Arkansas causing estimated damage of at least 2 million dollars. The state capitol in Little Rock and Arkansas State College at Jonesboro were hit by winds. A boy drowned and at least 21 people were injured, four hospitalized. Jonesboro damage estimated at 1.25 million dollars, statewide up to 500 thousand or more. Streets flooded in Jonesboro. bricks fell, injuring a man and cutting two students and a teacher. Andy Wargo, a Jonesboro student, reported a tunnel near the college gym.
Topeka AP reports Kansas temperatures rose today before a cold front moves in tonight. Forecasters expect only a moderate drop with little precipitation and a light frost observed in northeast Kansas. Overnight lows ranged from 34 at Manhattan to 45 at Concordia with unsteady barometer readings and high northward cloudiness through Thursday.
