City Dads to Buy New Fire Truck

The city commission directed City Manager R. J. Hayes to finalize fire truck bid specifications after review by Fire Chief C. W. Brennan. Hayes will submit the specs to the Kansas Inspection Bureau for approval before bids. The purchase supports the city’s fire insurance rate classification.

Two Pirates Nabbed By Cuban Officials

Cuban officials held two American men Alvin Table Jr. and William Lees after they fled a Bahaman island in the yacht Muriel III. They allegedly killed boat owner Angus Boatwright when escaping to Nassau after illicitly stealing a boat in Key West. Barbara Table, 18, wife of Alvin, remained on Isabela de Sagua island.

Summit Talks Set for Labor Management Conferences

President Eisenhower announced a series of labor management summit conferences to improve industrial peace. Train Jumped Tracks Kills Conductor. 11 Hurt

Eight cars of Southern Railway No. 30 Peach Queen derailed on a bank near Seneca South Carolina after expansion buckled the rail. Engineer J S Dean 67 Atlanta said he could not stop while traveling 55 to 60 mph. Conductor died and 11 passengers were injured.

Little Wichita Girl Strangled in Pedal Cart Tragedy

Vicki Sue McKown, 13 months old, was entangled in a pedal cart and strangled on Monday in Wichita. Mrs. Harold McKown found her daughter beneath the steering wheel and attempted mouth to mouth resuscitation before firefighters arrived with a resuscitator. she died en route to the hospital.

Accardo Held On Tax Charge In Chicago Case

Tony Accardo longtime Capone associate and Chicago crime syndicate boss was arrested for filing false income returns. Federal agents seized him at a 22 room suburban River Forest mansion and brought him to the downtown Chicago courthouse. the indictment covered 1956 to 1958 with reported incomes of 42862, 67450, and 68871. If convicted on all counts he could face nine years and 15000 in fines.

Hunter-Killer A-Sub Is Launched

In Groton Connecticut the Tulibee, first of a new class of atomic powered hunter killer submarines, will be launched Wednesday. The sonar packed vessel seeks enemy subs and features hydrophones and transducers in the nose and angled amidships torpedo tubes. It measures 273 feet, displaces 2600 tons, and carries 6 officers and 50 men.

Pregnant-Implant Fraud Suspect Exposed by Marshals

Norfolk report says Berthelene M. Ashton, arraigned on fraud charges for cashing a government check, appeared pregnant in court. Officials released her without bond fearing she would return for trial, but she failed to appear and marshals found the pregnancy was a pillow. Judge Hoffman cautioned stricter checks going forward.

Man Who Vanished Arrested in Iowa

Rex A. Baker, who disappeared after a car crash in Chanute, was arrested in Council Bluffs Iowa. The 1959 Oldsmobile involved in the wreck was identified as stolen from Wolf Motor Co Tulsa. Police found a .38 revolver and narcotic residue in the wrecked car and learned Baker had paroled status and listed Dallas Texas as his address.
