Kansas man talks to Kissinger in air wave encounter

Kansas ham operator Jack Goldon connected briefly with former secretary Henry Kissinger who was in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Kissinger spoke to 34 operators from California to Florida during his studio visit on April 11 while Goldon listened via Ed Bolton.

Kansans on shaky ground amid long quake history

Frank Wilson of the Kansas Geological Survey briefed Chanute Gem and Mineral Society members on Kansas earthquakes in 110 years. He cited 1867 Pottawatomie County quakes along the Nemaha Ridge with intensity about 5 on the Richter scale, noting chimney damage and a stalled Union Pacific locomotive. He added that quakes tend to cluster in bad years with eight events between 1929 and 1933.

Fugitive found hiding in hay near LaHarpe

Allen County sheriff's deputies captured 23 year old Michael O Neal at 3 56 p m Tuesday northwest of LaHarpe after a day and nightlong search. He was found under a bale of hay by a farmer who held him at gunpoint until officers arrived. O Neal, wanted in Missouri for escaping a Fayette jail, will be extradited Thursday.

Economy grows 5.2 percent in first quarter 1977

The Commerce Department reports a 5.2 per cent rise in real GNP to 1.297 trillion dollars for Q1 1977, the strongest gain in a year, despite heavy winter price pressures and factory shutdowns. The gain follows a 2.6 per cent fourth quarter and reflects weather impact on output.

Area forecast calls for occasional showers or thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight with possible severe storms and locally heavy rain. Highs in the low 70s, tonight’s lows upper 50s to lower 60s. showers may end Thursday morning and give way to partly cloudy skies. Winds south to southeast 10 to 20 mph, then northwest 10 to 15 mph before morning.

Prosecution Rules for Bad Checks Outlined by Neosho Official

Neosho County attorney Edwin Rideau III outlined how checks with insufficient funds or no account are prosecuted. Prosecution requires beyond a reasonable doubt, proper id on the check, seven day payment notice, and witness testimony from the clerk and bank depositor. Violations carry fines up to 2500 dollars and potential jail, with state penitentiary terms for higher offenses.

Postal rate rise on hold after unexpected postal surplus

Postmaster General Benjamin Bailar said the Postal Service can delay any rate increase for at least a year thanks to a rare surplus. For the 12 months ending March the service reports 5 million in excess revenue and 45.5 million for the year, with a larger deficit previously. A future rate hike depends on finances next year.
