A Buffalo reader letter describes Mrs. Lee Garmon of Chanute recalling the April 18 1906 San Francisco quake. She survived after her bed was buried, while her parents walked seven miles to reach her during the disaster and the ensuing havoc. The account quotes her educational essay detailing scenes of destruction and rescue.
About 200 local students and adults depart Chanute on a Santa Fe special to Kansas City. The 7:10 a.m. arrival and 8:45 p.m. return include Icecapades and a bus tour of Swope Park and the Country Club Plaza. Stops at Cherryvale Humboldt Iola Garnett Ottawa. 1,100 passengers, 17 high level coaches and two lounge cars. New elevated seating cars reportedly unseen in Chanute before.
A 19 year old Parsons woman Donna Eden died after two cars collided near a drive in theater entrance on US 160 east of Parsons. Passenger Richard Campbell 20 Parsons was unhurt when their car overturned. Driver Joseph E Barnett 17 Fredonia suffered no injuries.
City officials said the new clear well at the pumping plant was connected over a 24 hour period with no reduction in the water supply. City Manager Ross Cooper urged residents to conserve from 7 am Wednesday to 7 am Thursday while workers completed the connection. Improvements should finish at the pumping station in about a month.
Michael E. Ptacek 56, a former farm real estate salesman, was found dead yesterday in a car at his Johnson County home. A hose connected the exhaust into the interior. Mrs Ptacek said he had been despondent.
Manuel Martinez of Chanute and Albert L Pilkington of Mound Valley were reported in critical condition at Neosho Memorial Hospital around noon. The injuries followed a car wreck south of Chanute last Tuesday in which Frank J. Leon of Mound Valley was killed. Chalen L. Waller of Mound Valley had lesser injuries and was discharged. Ray Bonilla of Chanute escaped injury.
The Kansas State Firemen's Assn and Kansas State Assn. of Fire Chiefs with auxiliaries are holding a three day convention in Parsons. About 80 delegates attend with a tour of the Kansas ordnance plant on the program.

Main from 2 to 5 p.m. Hosts include Senior High School Future Nurses Club and VFW auxiliary chairwoman Mrs. Byrle Haynes. Cancer Sunday prayers requested and fund totals reach $1,473.84 toward a $3,284.38 country quota.
The Chanute Junior Chamber of Commerce led by Dale Stemple announces the fourth annual JayCee Jobs for Youth Program to place teens in permanent and summer jobs. Kansas State Employment Service will handle placements and registrations, with high schools and the public employment office coordinating. Last year 241 teens were placed, and organizers aim for more and better jobs this summer with broad community cooperation.
Egypt accuses Israel of an invasion by a 15 man patrol into the Gaza Strip near Deir el Ballah yesterday. The Egyptian detachment reportedly suffered no casualties and did not return fire as Israeli authorities deny the charge and say calm persists on the border.

Glenn Floyd Watson, 38, of Garden City Kansas, was killed when an automobile overturned 20 miles north of Fort Sumner on U S 84 yesterday. Two other men were injured in the crash.

Rep Hallack says House Democrats are excited to fund a soil bank before authorization. The House Appropriations Committee approved 1200 dollars for soil bank payments to farmers this year, prompting Secretary Benson to call it a gold brick and warn the move precedes authority. Congress had approved the soil bank plan in Eisenhower’s omnibus farm bill, then vetoed by Eisenhower.
The mobile X ray unit will visit Neosho County for retakes next Monday and Tuesday. Dr James M Mott of the State Board of Health says appointment notices have been sent to individuals asked to return for additional chest X rays. Retakes help improve diagnostic quality and may reveal disease. Retakes are set for Memorial Building from 10 am to 12 noon Monday and City Hall in Erie from 10 am to 12 noon Tuesday.
Four Navy airmen died in a midair collision over Corpus Christi. Aviation Cadet R. G. Voigt 21 of Watseka Illinois piloted the jet trainer. Lt. (J.G.) Gregory Bernard of Corpus Christi and Aviation Cadets John B. Page of Houston and Laurence H. Newell of Stafford Kansas were aboard.

In Sunnyside Utah Kaiser Coal Co mine 125 miles southeast of Salt Lake City three men were freed after up to 44 hours entombed beneath rock and mining equipment. LaVell Golding Joe Archuletta and Lloyd Heath were rescued with one miner Joseph Otterstrom still missing.
