President Kennedy said the government will take the minimum necessary steps to protect public interests as the steel industry seeks modernization. He stressed a free enterprise approach, fewer government intrusions, and a goal to prevent inflation while supporting industry and labor cooperation.
President Kennedy announced the dropping of charges in the case of Pfc. Larry D. Chidester and freed Pfc. Bernis Owen. The move followed a spirit of Easter week inquiry and involved reservists connected to Ft. Polk and Ft. Lewis with charges of criticizing the President and signing a letter.

Two men Larry Dean Mead of Cabool Missouri and Willard T. Smith with unknown address were charged in Kansas City with selling amphetamine pills without prescriptions to federal agents a year ago at a tavern. The case was announced by U.S. district attorney Newell A. George.
