In Reading Pennsylvania a 10 year old boy crawled into a bridge stanchion to chase a pigeon egg and required two hours of fire rescue and construction work to be hoisted 74 feet from the Schuylkill River. A policeman nearby commented the boy feared being late for supper.

Civil Defense in Chanute is restocking seven community shelters to house 7 505 persons for two weeks, with locations at Ash Grove Cement plant Memorial Building post office Alcott school former Junior College wing of the Senior High Tioga Hotel and St Patrick's school. Shelters include medical supplies a radiation detector a transistor radio and dry canned food supplied by the federal government and water in some buildings. The 200 bed emergency hospital at the water plant will shift to Hutton school in an attack. it holds 200 cots bedding medicine water purification system emergency generator X ray machine and office supplies.
