Sunken oil rig traps 12 workers

A giant oil rig broke loose and sank in the Gulf of Mexico trapping 12 men in an overturned survival capsule. Coast Guard and USS Lexington responders battled the 13 foot seas and 50 knot winds as 22 survived and two were unaccounted for. Survivors spoke of the chaotic moments and attempts to escape the capsized platform.

Tornado Splits Mobile Home In Scott City Kansas

A small tornado touched down on the south edge of Scott City Kansas splitting Nicki Blickenstaff’s mobile home in half while she and her 5-year-old son Shawn were inside They were unhurt aside from Shawn’s scraped forehead and scratched arm Four businesses were damaged by the tornado which traveled about a mile northeast with no other injuries reported.

Chanute to Relocate 465 Gas Meters by June 30 Deadline

Chanute plans rapid relocation of about 465 gas meters in residential areas and the central business district to meet a June 30 deadline. The move follows safety rules from the Federal Department of Transportation and the Kansas Corporation Commission, with meters to be moved outside buildings or into approved spaces. some meters will be rented if relocation outside is impossible.

Bennett signs two tax option bills giving local control

Gov. Robert Bennett signed two local option tax bills in Kansas expanding city and county powers. One allows a half percent sales tax by city referendum if county votes fail, with population or property value thresholds. The other enables reduction or repeal of the 3 percent intangibles tax subject to voter approval.

Eight-week wait seen for refunds

Kansas Revenue Secretary Kent Kalb predicts refunds will mail in about eight weeks. For the week ending Monday the state expects up to 450000 returns, less than half of the year total. The department has paid 291708 refunds totaling 6.3 million with an average of 28.73 dollars.
