Southeast Kansas Delegates Study Water Use at Forum

The Kansas Water Resources Board and state agencies hosted a public forum at the Memorial Building on water supply watershed treatment pollution abatement and irrigation. About 40 people attended with delegations from southeast Kansas and Miami Oklahoma. The session was led by C Y Thomas and was the first of six meetings in the state.

First airplane ride ends with bright sky and caution

Lawrence Child Dies Under Truck Wheels

Barbara Ellen Metsker, 5, died when the door of her father John Phillip Metsker’s pickup opened and she fell from the vehicle near Lone Star Lake, 14 miles southwest of Lawrence. The wheels crushed her as she rode with her father on Saturday.

Accident Near Erie Leaves Car Retired After Crash

Donald Moses of this town escaped injury when his motor car left US59 on a curve south of here last night. Undersheriff John Phelps and Lowell E. Baughn arrested Moses who admitted attempting to sleep at the wheel. He was charged with intoxication and later released on a $15 bond after the vehicle struck a telephone pole and was described as a total loss.

Nine Die in Kansas Weekend Traffic Toll

Kansas traffic fatalities rose to 165 for the year as nine people, including three children, died in weekend accidents. A Norton area two car crash killed Lawrence Dupree, 23, and Mrs. Marilyn Wyatt, 20, and her eight month old son Stephen. Mrs. Wyatt's husband Clair injured. A Salina area one car crash killed Dora Gile, 39, and Air Force member Billy Agee, 3d, near Salina. Other fatalities included Virgil Ingram, 45, near Argonia. five year old Barbara Metsker near Lawrence. Cathy Giles, 2, of Hoxie. and Jack Tilson, 43, of Wichita.

Driver Posts Bond After DUI Arrest Near Chanute

George Steele of Erie was arrested near Chanute Sunday by Trooper Dick Harbaugh on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and released on bond pending a hearing in justice court. His wife, a passenger, posted bond on an intoxication charge as reported by the county sheriff's office.

Theft at D X station on Fourth and Lincoln

A report to police says a burglar entered the D X station run by C. I. Newton at Fourth and Lincoln Friday night and stole candy worth about six dollars. Entry appears to have been made through a window according to officers.

Erie Tornado Warning Plan Considered for Neosho County Meeting

A meeting in Erie on April 25 at 7 30 p m will discuss establishing a tornado warning network for Neosho County. U S Weather Bureau officials will outline the program with Sheriff Lee Montgomery assisting. Similar sessions are planned for Fredonia and Yates Center on April 26 and 27 respectively.

Kanopolis Lake swim and new airplane open house headline

Dr. Harry Briggs swam 1.3 miles in 53 minutes in 56 degree Kanopolis Lake as preparation for longer swims including Lake Erie and possibly the English Channel. A separate open house showcased streamlined 1956 Cessna planes at Chanute airport with models from $8295 to $54950, drawing attendees and media from across the region.

Water use cut urged for 24 hour city conservation

City officials requested all homes and businesses curb water use for 24 hours from 7 am Wednesday to 7 am Thursday. No car washing or lawn watering as crews connect filters to a new clear well, which will add 157000 gallons of storage.

Plane Missing Over Lake Erie Nearshore

A search was ordered for a plane missing over Lake Erie about two miles from shore. Two aboard, radio contact lost at 700 feet. Pilot identified as G Pollock, a Broadway producer linked to the show Wake Up Darling. Pollock's NY address checked. no reply.
