Charlie Bartlett, a Tucson typewriter technician, freed a three foot python from a typewriter after a nearly hour long extraction. The snake’s owner was identified as 12 year old Bill Girden and his mother quipped about a snake on the keys.
The Big Sioux River crest passed Sioux City Iowa at 11.7 feet, well below a 15 foot record, as water receded to 10.5 feet. Volunteers and students aided sandbagging and dike repairs while North Sioux City remained evacuated and nearby communities faced ongoing flood threats along the Missouri and Des Moines rivers.
The Ray Cummings residence at 1512 S Highland burned Thursday afternoon after a hot water heater overheated. The kitchen, a bedroom and a rear utility room were lost with smoke and water damage throughout the house. The six children aged 8 to 13 were at school. Donations of furniture clothing and food poured in from local groups including FISH Kayettes Seventh Day Adventist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. The family, who moved from Sedan in January, will relocate to a nearby home owned by Cummings.
The Kansas House approved a new criminal code 78-34, sending the bill to the Senate with amendments including a contentious abortion section. If the Senate accepts House changes, Gov. Docking could sign the measure. rejection sends it to a conference committee. The abortion provisions are more restrictive than earlier Senate language. In a separate action, Republicans on the Senate Assessment and Taxation committee defeated a bill to eliminate federal tax deductions from the state income tax, arguing it would raise taxes under Gov Docking.
Sixteen Chanute High School seniors are named honor graduates for 1969. They must rank in the top ten percent, hold at least a 2.50 GPA, and have earned eight credits before senior year. A reception is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the school. Names and parental addresses are listed.

A 14 year old Humboldt area youth Kent E Butts died after falling into a grain bin while loading corn on the Friederich farm near Erie R 1. He suffocated as grain collapsed over him. His brother Chris 15 jumped in to help but was pulled out unharmed. Funeral plans set at St Josephs Humboldt.
