Philadelphia AP reports Dr. Gerald LeMole says he plays rock music during open heart operations. He notes slow tunes help patients relax before anesthesia and faster music maintains tempo for the surgical team.
Police in riot gear dispersed a noisy antiwar rally outside the hotel where Deputy Defense Secretary David Packard spoke. About 150 demonstrators, mostly youths, chanted slogans and called for Packard to be arrested as five men were seized for illegal assembly.
Moscow AP reports Nikolai Podgorny named second in the Soviet leadership, displacing Premier Kosygin in the Kremlin hierarchy. Brezhnev signaled the shift by reading Podgorny before Kosygin at the 24th Party Congress, while Podgorny advocated consumer goods and backed Khrushchev’s de Stalinization.
In Bowling Green Kentucky Rev Martin Luther King Sr told a racially mixed audience at Western Kentucky University that America has been too white too long and now risks becoming too black. He said the battle is not about hate and urged unity despite color.

Floyd R. Potter prominent Chanute businessman died Thursday evening at Neosho Memorial Hospital from a heart condition after about a week of illness. He operated a hatchery here for years and was active in First United Methodist Church Boy Scouts Rotary Club Chamber of Commerce and local education service. He served on the Chanute board of education including as president and worked on church and Scout committees. Born September 20 1915 in Girard he married Mary Ellen Comstock November 20 1938 in Fort Scott and is survived by his wife two sons his parents three brothers and a grandson. Funeral 3 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery Johnson Mortuary in charge.

The women's division runs the sale at the Memorial Building city garage open until 5 30 p m today and 10 a m to 5 30 p m Saturday. Prices cover cost and handling. Seven varieties are available with special packages, including combinations of red buds, golden rain, sweet gum, mimosa, honey locust, hackberry and coffee tree.
An employee at Handiwash Car Wash reported a 3:05 p.m. Thursday break in to the pop machine. Officers said soda and money were taken, with no other items disturbed.

Randy Sigler six rode near home at 5 p m Thursday when he fell then rode on and veered into a car coming up from behind. He escaped with a few cement burns and a scare. driver D E Childs slowed to avoid impact and the bike fender remained undented. About ten children witnessed the incident and the mother hopes it teaches caution for a safe summer.
