Bloodhounds Capture Three Prison Fugitives in Night Breakout

In Jesup Georgia AP report fugitives from a state prison camp were captured after a night escape. Bloodhounds and possemen traced the men who traveled about twenty miles on foot before surrendering unarmed. Billy Fouts was among those captured leaving nine convicts still at large from the breakout.

Judy Irwin of Fairfield school won first in the seventh and eighth grade group with a perfect score at the Neosho county spelling contest held in the courthouse. Forty-one contestants from eight schools competed in two divisions with first and second prizes and honorable mentions awarded.

Three Bodies Found in Car Near De Soto Kansas

Police identified the victims as Ronald K. Warsop Wesley Rowe and Leslie Spiering all 20. The three men had been missing since Saturday night and were found in a wrecked 1962 car in Cedar Creek near the Sunflower Ordnance Plant. Warsop was an engineering aide for the Kansas Highway Commission.

Another Day For X Rays In Neosho County Visit

Free chest X rays for Neosho County residents surpassed 3200 by Saturday with one day left for the state mobile unit. Of 3201 total, 958 were in other towns and 2243 in Chanute. The unit at Memorial Building planned 4:30 pm close, then 6:30 to 8:30 pm tonight, and tomorrow from 10 am to 12 noon and 1:30 to 4:30 pm.

Vandalism Reported To Police After Weekend Incidents

Police logged vandalism cases over the weekend including three white pines knocked down on Raymond Pierpont’s east of town driveway worth 75 dollars. A 1953 Ford’s back glass was broken at 1129 S Forest. the boy’s father would pay for damages. Eggs were thrown at Walter Bass’s residence 610 N Highland. suspects not identified.

Thayer Residents Lose Gas For Hours Friday Night

Thayer residents faced about five hours without natural gas after a valve on a Cities Service line outside a meter house west of Thayer was closed. Gas service returned around 11:30 after crews ensured all appliances and pilots were off to prevent fumes or explosions. Harold Sutton, gas supervisor, noted the valve closure affected Thayer while a second valve that could cut gas to Galesburg remained open. Cities Service provided the gas source though United Gas Service Co. held the distribution franchise in Oswego. Chanute fire units assisted in restoring service.

Miss Chanute pageant field grows with seven entries

The 1962 Miss Chanute contest field expands to seven entrants as applicants from Thayer Yates Center Humboldt Fredonia and Toronto join Chanute Junior College students Nancy Heilman Nancy Griffith Sarafane Clements Pat Fail Linda Malson and others. Deadline is midnight April 25 with the pageant set for April 28 in the Memorial Building. Top three receive scholarships totaling 175 plus additional prizes.
