Legislative leaders announced that Kansas and all but two states could forfeit about 8 million dollars in federal education funds. The report cautioned implications for state education programs and fiscal planning.
Seven prisoners escaped from Montgomery County jail near Independence Kansas. Five were recaptured within two hours and two others found hiding in a women's restroom at Montgomery County State Lake. Donald Kirk and Clyde Billips identified among the recaptured. One inmate faced rape and murder charges, another burglary. Authorities say jailer Overpowered, but only seven inmates returned to custody.
