Journalism class at Chanute Junior College updates readers on the 25 year celebration plans and a list of 47 graduates with unknown addresses. Tribune readers provided 28 addresses. banquet reservations and reunion luncheons for classes 1938 to 1941 are planned with public attendance.

Open House At Koch Bros Furniture Draws 400 Attendees

More than 400 people visited the expanded Koch Bros. Furniture display rooms at 126 West Main during an open house held yesterday and today. The remodeled building, adjoining the old Mainstreet theater, now houses the entire showroom space and reinforces the firm as one of Chanute’s oldest continuing businesses dating to the 1870s with roots from Gustav and William Koch. The event runs through Saturday.

The Topeka traffic death log shows 24 hours ending 9 am with 0 fatalities. For April 1961 the period totals indicate 115 deaths, compared with 102 deaths in the same 1960 period.

Series of Improvements For Secondary Roads

Neosho County undertakes a series of road improvements including four bridges and grading totaling 76854 dollars. The Danville Creek bridge west of Kimball spans 190 feet with main pier work in progress and grading nearly finished.

Thayer Senior Wins Neosho UNESCO Essay Contest

Glenda Timmons, Thayer High School senior, won first prize in Neosho County UNESCO essay contest with an expense paid trip to Washington and New York. Second prize went to Charles O Bryan of St Paul, a $25 Chanute Junior College scholarship recipient.

In Topeka a student was awarded a $250 college scholarship by Kansas UNESCO. The grant supports higher education and marks a recognition of merit from the state chapter.

Post Office Rush At Council Grove

Postmaster C A Kirkpatrick expects the Council Grove Kansas post office to process at least 250000 first day covers for the Kansas centennial stamp by May 10. Requests began three weeks ago from Germany and Japan and grow daily. The six member staff has doubled and 40 to 50 extra workers may be needed by May 10. The 250000 covers exceed the office’s usual annual first class mail.

Hutchinson AP The Kansas Federation of Women's Clubs ended its three day convention with Mrs Wilbur Marshall of Leon installed as president. Named president elect was Mrs J W Hinkle Sr of Great Bend. Kansas Weather Forecast and Temperatures Trend

Topeka AP reports temperatures plunging below freezing in parts of Kansas with a forecast of possible rain or snow by late Saturday. Today expected highs range from the 50s in the east to the 40s in the west, and Goodland logged 16 degrees overnight. Thursday readings varied from 67 at Chanute to 43 at Goodland with a forecast of partly cloudy skies and little temperature change through Saturday.

Grassland Fire Burns 40 Acres South of Here

Firefighters battled a grass fire three miles south and a half mile west of town yesterday. Chief C W Brennan said 40 to 45 acres burned on Rex Niver George Rausch and Mrs A F Essary properties as winds fanned the blaze. Fire crews answered at 4 27 p m and returned at 6 40 p m.

Residents urged to contact tax assessors for missing listings

Erie Neosho County residents told by County Clerk Marion Showalter to seek out deputy, area, and township assessors to complete property tax listings under Kansas law. Missing filings affect state grants and automobile tax eligibility, with per capita funds cited at about $12.50. Assessors named include Chanute staff Lou Darlington Jean Eyler Mary Ann White Eva Paar and E A Reeves. One-Car Crash Causes Heavy Vehicle Damage Near Here

A 1956 Plymouth driven by Mrs. Veronica Brungardt of Galesburg R 1 suffered extensive damage in a one car accident on a county road southwest of here around 9:30 a.m. The car overturned after skidding on loose gravel. Brungardt was not injured. Undersheriff Lester Marts reported the loss at about $600.

Zoning Board Denies 501 E. 6th Lot Size Exception

Mr and Mrs Tommy Anderson had their request for a lot size exception for a proposed house at 501 E 6th denied by the zoning board of appeals at a public hearing last night. A further appeal to the city commission is expected.

Demos Not to Block Emergency Action in Kansas

In Topeka the Kansas House agreed to not block emergency measures on liquor, cigarette and 3.2 beer taxes. Republicans say the tax rise funds a per pupil emergency aid. Democrats argue the taxes are unnecessary and favor liquor interests. The action could adjourn the legislature by midnight with possible Saturday work and next week if needed.

Canvass Confirms Minor Vote Changes in City Race

Official canvass of Tuesday city election results shows two small adjustments in the Tribune’s figures. Dave Evans gains one vote to 2117 for the unexpired city commission term, while Don Abbuehl’s school board total drops to 1997. Changes occur in precinct 3, ward 4. Evans remains the top vote getter overall. Abbuehl is second.

Warning Tests Not Satisfactory In City Air Horn System

City officials found the air horn storm warning test unsatisfactory with improvements planned. A relay stuck on the South Evergreen unit caused a failure to shut off the horn during the test. Additional testing will boost air pressure and fix the relay, possibly adding a fifth horn at the light plant.

Collisions Cause Damage to Several Vehicles

Two crashes reported in the city left three cars damaged. Billie E King's 1956 Mercury sustained left front damage estimated at 40 dollars after turning from Allen onto Oak, while Ma deline A Works' 1955 Chevrolet had right front damage estimated at 75 dollars as his eastbound Oak vehicle collided with Kings. A 1960 Chevrolet driven by Joe Sutcliffe sustained 20 dollars of damage when backing from a drive and bumping a 1949 Dodge truck driven by Larry Ingraham. no damage to the truck.

No Girls Are Big Trouble For Arctic Scout Goering

Kent Goering 18 of Neodesha Kansas says absence of girls is a major inconvenience during a five month Greenland stay with Camp Century. He explains subzero temps winds over 100 mph 97 days of darkness and living 60 feet underground while aiding Army Engineers and scientists at the underground snow city. The nearest girls are 110 miles away at Thule Air Force Base.
