In Chanute this week residents were asked where they would most like to stay home from. Answers ranged from avoiding travel with children to preferring home duties, hospitals, or distant places such as Alaska, Berlin, Russia, and California reflecting personal concerns and travel aversions.
Weather summary from eastern Kansas notes heavy rainfall boosting topsoil moisture and aiding wheat and pastures. Record heat prior to the front gave way to cooler, unsettled conditions with showers and possible thunder showers. Local precipitation figures include Chanute at .26 inches and multiple towns reporting over an inch in recent events.
Washington residents and a five member zoning board clashed over a multimillion dollar Soviet embassy project in Chevy Chase. The board voted 3 to 2 to deny Martin Decker's plan to sell the 16 acre Bonnie Brae estate to the Russians, despite President Johnson’s approval. The ruling preserved the residential character of the area amid objections.
A 1955 Chrysler driven by Charles E. Larson 34 of R 2 sustained about 200 damage after a collision with a southbound semi-trailer at Lincoln and Main around 12 30 a.m. Larson was cited for no driver license and failing to yield. A 1955 Mercury owned by Larry Truster 514 S Evergreen had 50 door damage after a bump by a 1958 Ford driven by L J Karry 41 of South Mound in a 1623 S Santa Fe parking lot. Damages to other parked cars were reported by Mrs L A Stout 806 S Allen and Mrs Forrest Brundage 214 W Main.
Wesley Gosch of Norwich reports his 7 year old registered Angus cow delivered three bull calves last Wednesday. The calves average about 30 pounds and mother and offspring are doing fine with Gosch assisting feeding. Kingman County agent cites veterinarians who estimate the odds of triplet birth at one in 106,797.
Authorities recovered a stolen typewriter reported missing December 19 from the Davidard home in Rhode Island. A local resident pawned it in Chanute for another man, unaware it was stolen, with his account confirmed by a lie detector test. The man accused of pawning has since been recommitted to an Oklahoma prison for parole violation.
The Kansas Federation of Women’s Clubs voted to hold its 1965 convention in Junction City from April 7 to 9. At the 1964 meeting, awards were given for community improvement: $500 to the Tuesday Study Club of Edna, $200 to the Moscow Study Club, and $100 to the three Madison clubs. The Madison clubs also won for best all‑around program of study and activity.
Sen. Thomas J. Dodd voiced support for the House civil rights bill as a “good and moderate” step toward establishing the legal framework for Negroes to secure basic rights while insisting reforms must not come at the expense of other Americans. He spoke during the 22nd day of civil rights debate, arguing voting, school access, and public facility rights should not harm others.
General Douglas MacArthur remains in a peaceful coma that is gradually deepening due to liver failure. Army surgeon general Lt. Gen. Leonard D. Heaton, with Brig. Gen. Henry S. Murphey and Col. Thomas Whalen, said other vital signs are becoming harder to sustain and death would likely not come in weeks.
A tornado struck Wichita Falls Texas killing seven and injuring dozens while destroying about 240 homes across 50 to 80 city blocks near Sheppard Air Force Base. The storm damaged the base including nurses quarters and barracks as relief crews mobilized with Red Cross and FEMA support.
New York Governor Rockefeller and Harold Stassen filed petitions for California's June 2 Republican primary joining Barry Goldwater if certified. Lodge is the top California favorite in a poll but will not appear on the ballot. Gronouski urged Wisconsin voters to back Governor Reynolds as a pro civil rights measure, amid the Johnson fight against Wallace.
Richland AP report notes a cause determination for the Thresher submarine disaster is near completion. John Conway says Navy will remove classified material before the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy releases the report to the public.
Adlai E Stevenson drew an enthusiastic and long ovation at the University of California Charter Day observance in Berkeley. He joked to Gov Edmund G Brown that if the applause had continued longer he would have come out to run for senator.
A 1961 Chevrolet registered in Wichita to the P. Lorillard Co. struck a bridge abutment on highway K39 about 8 40 a.m. nine and a half miles east of Chanute. The highway patrol estimated car damage at $1,000. Driver Thomas D. Castellani 27 of Pittsburg was not injured.
Rome AP reports Eugenia Grillo, a doctor of engineering and widow, was named Friday to head the state owned telephone company. The appointment marks the first time a woman has become director of any major Italian state operated agency.
United States and Panama move to restore normal relations and open talks over Panama Canal disputes after a new agreement pledging a just settlement was reached at an Organization of American States meeting. The crisis, sparked by flag disputes and mob violence, left over twenty dead and severed ties since January. President Johnson hailed Friday as a great day for democracy and indicated new ambassadors and mediators will be named soon.
J R Cheney a 53 year old Ottawa grocer and former mayor was appointed director of the Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission by Gov. John Anderson, replacing 68 year old Walter R Gage. Cheney plans no policy announcements until on the job.
