A 15 minute pre first hour program is voluntary for students and faculty, arranged by the Y-Teens and Kay Club with sponsors Leclare Overbay and Cecil Pankratz. Nine Die and Seventy Eight Hurt in Train Crash
In Colima Mexico nine people were confirmed dead and 78 injured when nine train cars carrying holiday crowds plunged over the Canyon of Death rim. Over Weekend Three Persons Hurt In Traffic Mishaps
A mother and two others suffered injuries in area accidents Saturday. Mrs. Robert G. Miller of Pittsburg and her son Melvin were treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a two car collision north of Morehead on US 169. Mrs. Miller had concussions and her son was released after minor injuries. Sheriff investigations credited the Miller collision to the two drivers, including Billy Cheesman of Thayer. Separately, James K. Read of Buffalo received cuts and bruises in a car truck crash west of Chanute. Read, following a pickup driven by Harold L. Anderson, tried to pass and swerved to avoid an oncoming car, sending the truck into a ditch and the Read vehicle to the highway. additional damage occurred to a parked car and other vehicles in urban incidents the same day.

Chanute voters go to the polls tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to decide a $55 000 armory bond and the four year mayoral seat. The bond would cover missing costs with $40 000 from state and federal funds if approved, while unopposed commission candidates determine a four year and a two year term.
Money and Food Breakin at Neocha Drive-in
Neosho County deputies investigated a break in at Cookys Cafe and the snack bar at the Neocha Drive-in theater north of Chanute Sunday night. Thieves used a screwdriver to entry the snack bar, pried open machines for cash, cigars, and food, including wieners. An estimated $20 in bills and silver was taken from a cup on a shelf. Deputy Montgomery and Undersheriff Phelps led the investigation with Patrolman Hale and John Leroy assisting.

Prison Official Killed In Escape Attempt
In Raiford Florida a desperate prisoner named George Arthur Heroux tried to shoot his way out of State Prison killing assistant superintendent J. G. Godwin and wounding guards L. D. Dodds and L. L. Wainwright who were not seriously injured. Guards overpowered him and he was placed in solitary. Superintendent L. F. Chapman said Heroux was a known bad character with no recent trouble. He did not reveal how the pistol was obtained. Heroux had prior armed robbery and murder intent convictions in Miami and a 25 year bank robbery sentence in Kansas City.

Meeting in Kansas City to seek new motor vehicle reciprocity
Officials from Topeka Kansas and Missouri will meet in Kansas City Missouri on Friday at 2 p m to pursue a new interstate agreement on commercial motor vehicle movement. Fred Gulick secretary of the Kansas Motor Vehicle Reciprocity Commission, said Missouri will indefinitely postpone enforcement of its vehicle registration laws against Kansas truckers during talks. Missouri said the reciprocity agreement ends April 5 because Kansas taxed Missouri truckers ten miles. Kansas legislature repealed the levy in the just finished session.
