A weekend of deadly crashes left 64 dead in 17 accidents across North America. Victims include teens, college students, and families. incidents spanned California Nevada Illinois Ohio Florida Wisconsin Wyoming and Maryland with trains, crashes and rollovers causing multiple fatalities.
The Supreme Court ordered fresh arguments on NAACP clashes with Virginia and Florida, signaling a possible swing vote in an eight‑member court. No hearing dates were set, and reargument covered trade regulation and tax deductible divorce costs, with fall term review of citizenship stripping for wartime evaders delayed.

The Public Health Service said the United States will fund an unprecedented 2 million dollar cross border medical research program with Poland. The plan spans up to five years and covers as many as ten laboratory projects on stomach cancer brain development and prenatal malformations. Funding arises from sale of American surplus farm products.

Seventh grader Sam Hedges of Royster Junior High earned an excellent rating for his general science exhibit at the Pittsburg science fair. He is son of Mr and Mrs Orville Hedges of 516 West 7th. The Acme Brick Company board of directors, a pioneer clay producer, was mentioned in the same clipping.
Cairo filed report says army officers in northern Syria led an uprising stopping the civilian government. The Aleppo broadcast claimed rebel control while Damascus warned plotters of severe punishment. Demonstrations reportedly occurred in Damascus as officers gathered to seek a solution.
Gov. John Anderson commuted Jeff Williams 62, former Hoyt banker, from two 350 year sentences to one 6 to 100 year term. Parole eligibility moves to three years eight months from conviction, with Parole Board decision after October. Williams previously faced 10 counts of embezzlement involving more than 157000 dollars. He had been at the state prison’s educational department and aided class schedules.
The sixth Chamber of Commerce Salute to Industry honors the Warwick wax plant operation of Western Petrochemical Corp. Richard Crawford plant manager will be guest at a luncheon at the Tioga Hotel with a plant tour to follow. Chamber directors meet at 11:30 for a brief session to name four new appointive directors for the 1962 63 fiscal year.
In a near two to one vote Swiss men rejected a constitutional amendment to bar acquiring producing or using nuclear weapons. The referendum results were 537387 to 286858 denying the ban and allowing government to decide defense needs for neutrality. The government had argued against disarming its right to respond to threats.

Davis R. Vandivier, 27, Norman Oklahoma, was killed when his small car crashed through a barricade into a maintenance truck on the Kansas Turnpike near El Dorado. He was alone. no maintenance workers were injured.
Kansas warms after a hard freeze with a slow warming trend through Tuesday. Overnight lows ranged from 16 at Goodland to 27 at Pittsburg, with 18 logged near Wichita. Highs Sunday hit 40 to 47 in northern to central towns, while today’s highs reach 45 to 50 with 30s at night, then a warmer Tuesday with 50s and clear to partly cloudy skies and no rain expected.
Fire Chief C W Brennan reported March fire loss in the city at about 150 and the first quarter total near 1 400, with 46 runs year to date, nine fewer than the prior year. Last month’s activity included residential, Tioga township, grass fires, carbon monoxide checks, car fires, false alarms, and inspections.
