An area coin collectors group plans an organizational meeting at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday in the Memorial building to elect officers, set by-laws, and establish monthly meetings. Participants note Lincoln cents flaws could boost future value as a hobby market grows.
The Chamber of Commerce announces eight new directors four elected to three year terms by mail and four appointed to one year terms. New electives are A. E Endres Robert Pennington Paul Parsons and Tom Durkin. Appointed directors are Aubrey Bostwick Dr James Kensett J D Lightfoot and James E Sheri. An officers meeting will follow at 3 p m Friday in the Memorial building.
An Air Force KC135 tanker crashed during a thunderstorm near Killeen Texas on a routine training flight from Bergstrom Air Force Base Austin. The four crew members were 1st Lt Rodney Anderlitch 25 San Antonio Maj Jesse Le Myrick 41 Wichita Falls Ist Lt Philip Camillo De Bonis 25 Newark NH and T Sgt Herman Allison Clark 45 Tampa Florida. The plane appeared to break apart before impact though two engines were severely damaged on ground.
Twelve rural schools from Neosho County held a county music festival at Grant Rural High School. About 380 students participated as schools such as Mentor Neosho Valley Bloomer Rural Union Valley Earlton Stark Kimball South Mound Hillcrest Riverview and Fairfield performed. The event showcased morning numbers and later chorus performances by lower and upper grades with all grades ending in Auld Lang Syne dedicated to retiring county superintendent Nelle Stevens.
ERIE Kenneth Heintz, 31, was brought back from Ottawa by Undersheriff Lloyd Moulton for a hearing on a highway patrol speeding charge he had ignored since December 20. In justice of the peace court, he paid his fine and costs and was released. The citation stemmed from Thayer.
The 1959 Kan Legislature closed its session with Governor Docking signing the omnibus appropriation bill. Vetoes trimmed items including public retirement program funds and district court reporters salaries. Major item allocates 1.2 million for Winter Veterans Hospital as a mentally retarded facility. Reapportionment boosts seven House seats, shifting seats from smaller counties to Wyandotte Sedgwick Johnson Barton and Saline.
Fire swept Hartzler Skelgas store in Yates Center damaging many displays including deep freezers stoves and air conditioners. Elderly resident Mrs Williams evacuated unharmed as firefighters confined the blaze to the storefront, suspecting a neon sign short after a prior storm. Fire siren failed. volunteers alerted by phone.
Severe weather across Texas and Oklahoma leaves six dead and dozens injured as tornadoes strike Vaughan and Bynum in Texas and nearby communities. An Air Force KC135 from Bergstrom Air Force Base perishes in a crash near Killeen during the storm.
Martha Chrisman a Thayer High School senior wins the Neosho County contest in the annual United Nations education test sponsored by UNESCO. She earns an all expenses paid trip to Washington D C and New York City with chaperones and hotel already arranged.
Fred Willard of Madison was elected president of the Southeast Kansas Angus Breeders Assn at the annual meeting. J C Piper Parsons was elected vice president and Paul Stinson Iola was re elected secretary treasurer. Ben Price Reading and Henry Morgan Greeley named to the board. Morgan for three years and Price for two. Twenty five attendees. Annual sale followed at the Chanute Sales Pavilion with 68 cattle consigned.
Ann Arbor Michigan Professor E Wendell Hewson of the University of Michigan explains spring fever as a real condition caused by warming temperatures. He notes the body reduces insulation and enlarges surface blood vessels to release heat. there is no known cure.
An Indiana state witness described a significant spacing between four gunshots as Minnie B. Nicholas allegedly killed her married lover Forrest Teel outside his new girlfriend’s apartment. Prosecutors argue the intervals show premeditation, while the defense says Teel was hit accidentally.
AP report states Herbert W. Thomas, 33, of Atchison, was killed when his rock-loaded truck plunged into a dry creek bed north of Atchison. Authorities investigated the accident and noted it occurred yesterday.
Three youths Victor Neil 23 Bill Hugh Sarrenger 18 and Theodore Nirseuchl 16 were held in county jail on charges of breaking into the Gismo skating rink west of Walnut Friday night and stealing a record player and 77 records. Nirseuchl admitted taking part and the record player linked the others. bonds were set at 2000 each and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Friday at 11 am.
ERIE The E L Gieger land condemnation appeal in district court was expected to reach the jury late today. Appellants testified this morning with Ivan Shaffer and F A Johnston, South Mound vicinity land owners, on the stand. First defense witnesses included Gieger and his wife. Parsons witnesses totaled three by noon with two more set to testify including Bernard Budd, Chanute. Ebar Schultz, Chanute. Cleo Dalton, Erie.
Thayer school burglars who tried to open the safe last weekend left with a 12 inch wrench a quarter inch electric drill electrician's pliers and a small electric sander from the manual training room. The loss was not immediately discovered.
The Topeka AP summary lists 1 traffic death in the last 24 hours, bringing the year total to 110 fatalities for 1959, versus 94 in the same period of 1958, per state accident records.
