A gas explosion at Fire Creek mine near Montgomery West Virginia entombed about seventy men. Rescue crews recovered five dead and seven seriously injured with reports of forty to sixty killed and about twenty five trapped a thousand feet below. Details are scarce and the region is in turmoil.
Reports from Molteno and London recount Gen. Gatacre taking Stormberg with ten guns after Boer forces abandoned the stronghold and retreated northward. Simultaneously Lord Roberts signals Natal is practically clear as Buller advances toward Bloemfontein. Brabant takes Labushagnse Nek. casualties total thirteen killed and seventeen wounded.
Injured workman George Stickman and A F Grabner proprietor of the drug store where the explosion occurred suffered head and body injuries. The blast caused extensive damage to the store and stock. In other news the Washington house committee reported favorably on a Pacific Cable bill authorizing a 300000 dollar annual subsidy to lay a line from San Francisco to Honolulu and beyond by 1902 1903. Admiral Watson was relieved of command of the Asiatic squadron due to ill health and Admiral Remey takes over.
In Duncan's Mills Illinois postmaster W D Carter died of paralysis. With no willing Republican heir, Democrats scramble for the office. Bondsmen name John H Smith for temporary postmaster as A F Krebaum and I E Beaty vie for the role amid a heated local contest.
Monday afternoon H. F. Cheater, manager, discovered a box of matches in a transfer barn locker. About one quarter was burned while the rest remained intact. The cause remains unknown as the locker held papers and inflammable material, and a wider blaze was narrowly averted.

Miss Davis, a student at Indiana University in Bloomington, has smallpox after exposure from a roommate who secretly visited a young man quarantined weeks earlier. The report notes the roommate’s clandestine activities led to the patient’s infection.
