American Forces Score New Philippine Victories

In the Philippines near Alaminos and other sites, the Thirty-sixth Infantry routed about two hundred insurgents with twenty eight enemy killed wounded or captured and one American wounded. Other skirmishes at Aritaca Calamba and near Dinalupijan left seven insurgents dead and thirteen captured with no American losses. Troops seized ammunition guns and 125 head of cattle. A detachment of the Twenty sixth Infantry on Panay Island inflicted heavy punishment on rebels near Saia Romblon rebels surrendering to American forces.

Bodies of the Maine Dead Return for Arlington Rites

Bodies of the Maine dead were brought ashore at Newport News from the battleship Texas and sent by special train to Washington to lie in state at Arlington Cemetery with full naval honors in the presence of President McKinley and his cabinet. Twenty bodies have been recovered at the Brazwell mine in Brownsville, Pa., with more feared still inside the mine.

Smallpox scare as A C Murphy returns home ill

A C Murphy, dealer for J B Harris, arrived in town ill and suspected smallpox after possible exposure in Nashville. A pest house is built at the city dumping ground, the city building is fumigated, and officials plan to keep the second floor closed while authorities determine if the illness is indeed smallpox.

Both of His Legs Cut Off in Chicago Area Accident

Charles Stevens, an Illinois Central brakeman, was seriously injured this morning near Chicago when he was knocked from a train by a signal. Both legs were severed by the cars. He is hospitalized at St Luke's in Chicago. Stevens, 29, had worked in the Central yards and on the road two years and recently married.

Christmas Entertainments At Champaign Churches

Christmas exercises were held at all Champaign churches since Saturday afternoon. Programs followed The News announcements with minor additions. The events were well attended and pleasing to all. Children received special attention and were happy. Organizers do not regret the time spent in preparation.

General Lawton's Remains to be Sent Home by Thomas

Manila reports the transport Thomas will carry General Lawton's remains to the United States. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday in Manila.
